I just rebuilt the engine on my 1985 yamaha tri zinger (Top and bottom end) and went to start it and it woulnt start. Pulled the plug and grounded it against the head and no spark when I turn the motor over. The motor was running before I rebuilt it. Also I did wash the trike off at the car wash today before I put the motor back in and noticed the 2 big wire connecters where wet so I blew those out with compressed air. Any suggestions would be appriciated thanks Glenn Oister

sounds like you could have some mostuir in your stator take it apart clean it real good check the points gap and you could have posibly fried the coil from washing it..not sure how it dose it but iv done it befor..pressure washed it and then the coil was toast :(

I washed the frame before I put the motor back in the frame so doubt there is any water inthe motor and it does not have points in it?. So not sure what gap you are talking about thanks though Glenn oister

there should be a set of points behind the fly wheel...im not fimiler with the tri-zingers but they should have points there not sure of the gap..on them...will have to wait for someone who knows the zingers to read this post:(

They don't have points, they have a stator and magnets. Ok, you know that kill switch that is on the back of the machine? Make SURE that that rope with the little metal piece is on the kill switch. It won't run without it. It is a safety device. The zingers don't have the best electrical system, they tend to fail.

I hope you learned that its not helpful to somebody working on their machine to start throwing out wild guesses when you havent a clue. They can waste hours of time following someones directions because they assumed that the person who answered their questions actually did so, because they had some experience with the machine and knew the answer.

I dont mean to pick on you, because there are several others that have a habit of doing it, and it leaves me feeling sorry for the posters, because they have to sift through 15 answers and figure out which ones are based on actual knowledge and which ones are just made up. If its been there a couple days without helpful answers, and he's ready to accept wild guesses, then post your wild guess, and him know thats what it is.

The tether kill switch in the back already mentioned can be a problem. I cant remember whether its normally open or normally closed but it can be checked with an ohm meter. It can be disconnected, but if it runs in the closed position, you have to connect the wire plugs together. If memory serves me right, though, it runs with the switch open, and just needs unplugged.

Also check the start/run/stop switch. For some reason it will not deliver spark in the run position, unless its already running. Spark test must be done with it in the start position.

The most common failing electrical component in the Zinger is the little tiny pickup coil under the flywheel, though they break a wire or ground out from scuffed insulation more than they actually fail. Its should have a small output, like 3v or something when you pull the rope. The amount isnt important, beause they normally either work or they dont. The coil can also be ohmed out. I dont remember the resistance, but they usually fail as an open.

That is correct, You can just unplug one of the wires to the tether switch and it will run.

Thanks for all your help I did oreder a new coil and i will check the pick-up coil under the flywheel. Hopefully I can get it fixed thanks again Glenn Oister

I have a brand new coil sitting in my room. I could have saved you a few bucks.
