what makes the engine smoke?

besides the rings ,why would the engine smoke.Could the timing be off or something like that.First gear is fine ,2nd and third is ok ,forth boggs and fifth boggs.(the engine 200es big red 84),the spark plug has black soot all over it,why do they foul out plugs,i have another one it dont smoke and starts right up, runs great but eats plugs ,any way to fix this,thanks........svo58

well if its oil burning and its not your rings it could be bad valves or vales out of adjustement as for the plug problem sounds like its just needs to be tuned...do a serche on the forms arbout sparkplug readings and tunein and what not and you will find a whole wack of threds

hey, might just need an oil change, 10w40 valveline works great. don't over fill, screw in the dipstick!!

coulld be running too rich
