hey guys anyone ever use a 185s flywheel puller? well i got mine in today as tight as i could then put the other bolt in it and when i started tightning that other bolt in the big on that threads into the flywheel popped out stripping like 8 threads of the puller!! i had my bro take it back today with a note and the receipt since i had to work after school and i dunno whats goin on..anybody else have any difficulty with these? it didnt do any damage to the flywheel that i can see thank god but that puller is screwed!!
the other bolt? you didnt put the bolt in to hold the fly wheel on then use the puller did you?!?

no no no..i took the bolt and washer off then threaded in the bolt that threads into the flywheel then put the smaller longer bolt into the bigger bolt and when i got it tight it just popped out i was like wtf this thing is a pos! and got really mad! but the thought of the new oury comfortable rubber grips i bought along with it calmed me a little..lol..jk i was still mad as hell
huh odd sounds as if the puller didnt get temperd in the over from what i can make out..lol...i dont know what a actual fly wheeler puller looks liek i just use a bering puller...

o..well its a big bolt that threads into the flywheel and its got as hole in the middle for the other bolt to go threw and push the crankshaft bolt to pull the flywheel off..everytime i took it to the place i got the puller from its off within 30 seconds put hes also got a impact wrench and some other cool tools that i dont..im sittin there with a 13/16 inch open end tightning in the big bolt and a 5/8 inch socket and ratchet tightning the small bolt lol it takes forever 2!
ohh...i havent seen a fly wheel puller with the smaller bolt in the middle thats why i was confused...shouldent the big bolt just tighten to push on the crank shaft and push the fly wheel off cuz its on a taped shaft if im not mistaken...

they make them softer then your flywheel, so you wont mess the threads on your flywheel. If your pulling the threads on your puller.. then that flywheel is on TIGHT.. and Id start looking for a gear puller.. Thats my experience with tight flywheels.... a gear puller, and a new flywheel, cause that one is fixing to be toast.

yea i tried a gear puller..all it does is bend the flywheel starter cage..it dont work to well..i bent a 30 dollar hammer trying to pry it off! it is on tight i think the flywheel key melted and its not getting the spark at the right time..u never know with 185s's they are good machines but when they break they break..they are like toyota engines...they last forever till they break then there toast..lol..it was a homemad flywheel key anyway..but it worked..it was actually for my briggs 3hp minibike engine but i cut it down some and put er in there and bam it worked..i was like hell yea and started ridin ..didnt give me any trouble till i hit the trails i knew i shouldnt have..lol..and ridin without the pullstarter on is also bad cause the 2 foot of mud i hit most likely went to the stator and fried it..lol..good thing i gotta back up
you should have takein it to that guy you normally do and watch him try and pop it off in 30secs...would be intresting...might be able to get it off with an impact...if the key is soft metal..which it sounds like it is if it melted

well my bro took the puller back today since it was stripped there was no putting it back in..it went in crossthreading when i tried again and i said the heck with it im not gonna screw it up..the reason i didnt just take it to the guy in the frist place is because the engine was on the trike and i didnt feel like taking it all back aprat when i just got it together..and no truck and all my friends with trucks play football..lol so there gone till after the guy closes so im pretty much screwed...im not 2 worried about it..ill wd 40 it and get out the small wire brush and clean that flywheel before i put the puller back on..it should go on farther and not pull out..it only went in about 4 or 5 threads for some reason..im thinkin rust but i could be wrong so ima clean it all up before i try it again...i dont got anything to heat it with either...im guess all thos overheating periods on the road with that thing finally melted that key..but who knows..ill find out when i get it off and if it is melted ill use the spare flywheel without all the crap that would be in there

This is the best puller I ever used. Got it from my local Honda shop. Four different sizes for about $26.00can.

There is a trick to removing flywheels that have been put on too tight. I am hoping the puller you used is left hand threaded. If so and you get another then follow this method ( it has only failed me maybe 1 time out of 100 ).
1) Install the outer part of the puller tightly.
2) Then put the center bolt in and tighten it up. Don't over tighten it to where it strips the thread off the puller.
3) Once it is tight then take a regular sized ( 12 - 18 oz ) hammer and tap the head of the bolt lightly as if you trying to drive it like a nail ( Don't hit it on the side of the bolt / puller ). NOTE: You don't want to hammer it so hard that you mushroom the crank.
4) Then tighten the bolt up a little more ( being careful not to over tighten it to where it strips the threads ).
5 ) Repeat steps 3 & 4 as needed.
How does this help to remove the flywheel? This works by jarring the flywheel ever so slightly that it comes loose.
Note: On a few times I have re-installed the nut on the end of the crank ( with the washer removed ) to help keep the crank from mushrooming. If you use this trick be sure the nut is flush with the end of the crank AND that there is a little space inbetween the flywheel and the nut.
The bad part, not every puller made has a big enough opening for the nut to fit in. So this option may not work for you.
Normally using this method you can save the flywheel. On a rare occasion ( sp? ) you will damage it. I have only damaged 2 in over 15 years.
I hope this helps.

P.S. If you were close I would show you how easy it really is. ;)

I'm not familiar at all with a 185S. I picture it being similar to my ATC70 and most other flywheels I've pulled. are you 100% sure that the center puller bolt is going through the flywheel center bolt hole and pushing on the crankshaft? If the center puller bolt was pushing on the center of the flywheel and not the crankshaft that would be why it stripped.
And If you're pushing on the crankshaft flywheel bolt, make sure it's backed off a couple turns too. Don't back it out too much because you'll bend the screw.
What you've done is SHEARED your flywheel key, not melted it. unless it was plastic or something!
Oh yeah, and you ought to be playing football too! :D
Good luck with yer knew puller.

i just put it on as tight as i could evidently i didnt put it on far enouhg cause only about 4 or 5 threads stripped and there is like 12-15 threads..yes its left hand threaded..i didnt know any of these tips so thanks guys..o yea the guy told my bro to get a belt sander and sand it down to show the threads again then get a tap and die set and re do the threads..im like yea man im just made of 200 bucks lemme just go buy a brand new tap and die set thats metric to fit this pos that you cant exchange..the guy must have been high cause there is no saving that flywheel puller unless u have the tap and die set...luckily a friend does cause his dad owns a machine shop.hehe hes doin it for me monday and he said hell have it done by tuesday i was like sweet! but when i got home i thouhgt about gettin the hacksaw and cuttin off the bad threads cause it still left about 10 or more threads wich would be enough to hold in place but i decided not 2...yea i played football for a couple years and got sick off the coaches trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro..i got enough to deal with at my own house and i dont need him 2 lol or else id play
