On a 1986 honda 350X do you have to screw the dipstick in to get the proper oil level?

hey, wrong, always screw it in to get the correct level. If it's over full, it will foam up the oil, and cause problems.

I just fill it what it specs for when changing. If it does not leak or burn it, it won't use oil.
usually 1 quart for my 110 and 1 quart for my 185.

I've always been advised and have always used the method (25+ years) stated by Rob and Greyhound and have never had any problems. my 2cents.

My trike calls for quart of oil. I fill it with quart, put dipstick in without screwing it in, won't even register on stick. I screw it in and stick shows full.
Don't over fill. thats bad news and blows out seals, makes clutch do funny things and blows out the crankcase ventilation and makes a horrid mess.

All of my Honda owner's manuals (trike and motorcycle) say DO NOT SCREW IN.

Don't screw in
For 350X, warm it up for 3mins, then pull drian plug and let drain for like an hour. Kick motor a few times slowly to cycle out any residual. Always change oil filter, then pour in 2 full quartrs of Honda oil. Your done. Dipstics read funny on 350X's but 2 full quarts is perfect.
For the 200X, 1 full quart
