I have an 84 200x, new top end and valves. Cleaned out the carb. Runs good for a while then starts detonating. Thats what messed it up before I got it. Has stock carb, lid on, 108 main, pilot 2 1/4 out. Help. I turned the timing back, still does it. Will run with the choke on the middle setting. Anyone know what I'm missing. I want to get this fixed so I can sell it. Just wouldn't feel right selling someone else my problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

what compression ratio ? .. maybe you need to run higher octane?

Should be stock? All I did was put a new piston in. I am already running 91. The motor is "stock" I am hoping the compression would be close to stock.

The stock mainjet for the 84 is 110. Least thats what it says in my manual.

Plug looks real light brown, looks lean. I need to replace the o-ring at the carb boot and shoot it for air leaks. I just can't figure why it runs with the choke partially on.

if you have an air leak where you say you need an new o ring that is the problem..its sucking air thus leaning it out so when you put the choke half on, it restrics the air and gets more gas thus eaving out the leaning effect a little bit :)

I'm hoping thats the problem. Idles fine, usually I would expect it to idle up with a leak. the old o-ring looks kinda flat. I'm just not sure why it gets so hot it detonates. The head and piston were hammered from it detonating before. It had actually wore a groove to the head stud hole and was losing compression down into the crank case.

Could possibly be a blown head gasket,if the o-rings not the problem thats what I would look for.

My 200X runs the same with the choke on as it does with it half on. Now get this. My 200X won't even start or run cold or hot with full choke. I think I run my 200X on the rich side cause it doesn't ever need choke. Choking mine puts to much gas in there and floods it. I have a 113 or 116 (can't remember)main and te pilot set from the factory. I run the bigger jet casue of my mods.

I have the factory honda manual right in front of me. It says

Main Jet 1983 #110
after 1983 #108

It's a bit lean because of your main jet, and a worn o-ring definitely doesn't help. gaskets are cheap off of ebay, i'd try a 108 main and look into getting that 0-ring. Ace Hardware near me actually has a bunch of different sized o-rings for a few cents, check your local hardware store.

Thanks I got the O-rings today, need to put them in and test for leaks. The head gasket is brand new. This bike had this problem when I bought it, though , I didn't know it. The head and piston were pretty beat up from detonation. Hopefully, I can get this Honda running again. I know Honda has never had a reputation for reliable trikes so I guess I'll just have to hope....just kidding

if its detonating, i would suspect timing for sure and especially since it has done this before, I would suspect something that advances the timing.

I retarded the timing a little, I still need to check it..took it out for a spin, starts right up, idles runs good. Now it feels like the clutch is slipping...1st $700.00 its yours.
