hey guys i want to eventualy put a 500 cc 2 stroke engine in my tri z and being yamaha never made a 500 i am goign to use eather a cr 500, kx 500 or and if they make it a rm 500 engine wich of these two possibly 3 engines would be the best to use in my tri z.

rm didn't make a 500 engine,so that leaves the cr or kx.I have heard good things about both.if i had a honda I would go with a cr and if I had a kawi I would go with a kx and since you have a yamaha then I guess you could go with what you want.I heard that the kx puts out more power but thats just what I heard.does anyone know what those engines put out?I heard 60 hp stock??

TRI-Zbrian

yeah id also liek to know and i also herd soemthing like 60 or so hp..... man that sounds so bad ass id love to have a 500 in my tri z... i guess im going to be giveing a couple places some calls about a recked bike or soemthing.... i had a chance to buy an 88 cr 500 a while back for 500 bux..... man i should have bought it and use the engine in soemthing like the tri z.

put a newer KX500 motor in it, you'll be leavin those 500R (cr500 motor in R frame) in the dust.

i know for a fact the 99 kx500 motors put out about 65 HP stock, and from what i've read, it doesnt take much at all to raise that number drastically

Hey I have a fully tricked out Husky 485cc engine that is rock fast that you could mod to fit. It has the left side kicker too hehehe.

TRI-Zbrian
10-17-2004, 03:06 PM
i am thinking about doing something a bit different and useing a kx engine if i can find one..... can some of you T3 guys that have used kx 500 engines chime in on how well the power delivery is on the engnes....

BigGreenMachine
10-17-2004, 03:18 PM
Brian, do the Husky swap, thats something that would open a few eyes when they ask whats in your bike. No doubt the Husky makes just as much Hp and it would be totally awsome to have the Husky powered Tri-Z.

TRI-Zbrian
10-17-2004, 03:33 PM
lol i just PMd him about the engine.....i am goign to get soem info ont he engine....

does anyone know anything about these engines..... he said the kicker is on the left side ? lol i hope the shifter is still on the left side...

any way any one that has any info on these engines please chime in ... if he wants a reasonable amount for it i am going to think about it .... i wonder if the tri z pipe will work on it so i can use the ariganal mounting points on the frame.....

iv heard old husky motors are powerhouses but will blow up faster than other bikes..not as reliable.. but i dont know..

BigGreenMachine
10-17-2004, 03:46 PM
I've heard they are strong motors, havent heard about the blowing up part. Any highly modded engine can be unreliable, its just a matter of how you take care of it.

TRI-Zbrian

the only thing that would keep me from getting something is .....parts availability for them.... if i go with a cr or a kx 500 there are all kinds of engine/performance parts for them...

I think RM did make a 500, but it was nack around 82. Yamaha made a 490, which is what I was thinking about putting in my tri-z, but they are air cooled, dont know about reliability, and about parts availability.

You've heard of "Quadzilla" haven't you!?!?!? :beer

I don't know how good it is but ya can find that engine for sure, they are on sale on ebay a few times each year and go dirt cheap $$$ !!!

Has anyone tried to figure out the types of adjustments to the frame that would be needed to fit a 500 cc motor in the Tri Z?

As far as the Quadzilla motor....yes its a fast son of trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro if its running right. My Zilla is stock with a Bill's pipe and in mint shape...its is way way way faster than any 250R I have ever ridden...its not even close. Its also a very large motor and its doubtful that it would fit.

Hey Darius-
Ive watched Quadzillas on ebay for years now and I'm thinking of making one my next project. Did you buy your Quadzilla that clean or did you restore it like the TriZ? Is it pretty reliable?

Thanks, and BEAUTIFUL atv's by the way

It was clean like that when I bought it and it has few hours.

The motors on these are really amazing...it is like night and day compared to my Tri z. The motor ripppppps.

Mine is reliable because its not abused. If I rode it all the time and abused it then it may give me trouble.

I ride mine like once a year or less. Its just too powerful to ride around anywhere.

Thanks for the compliment.

I am going to put a modern YZ 250 motor in my Tri z and see how it works out. I would also consider putting a 500 motor in it if its possible...but I have my doubts.

if you can put a cr 500 engine in an atc 250 r then im sure it can be done to a tri-z

Sounds like a cool project with any of those motors. Anyone on here seen that tri-z with the kawi 1100cc its under extremely modified atvs.

Suzuki had an air-cooled RM500 in the early 80s. Yamaha had the WR500 in the early 90s. It was just a new name for the YZ490 motor with a wide ratio transmission.

There's been a guy here posting pics before who had a YZ490 motor in a Z.

tmecars, the guys that turned me on to the atc70 you purchased had a QuadZilla for sale a couple months ago. You might call and ask if they still have it.

KTM 550 beats all the open class motors.

No contest. Here is a quote from Dirt Bike back in 1993:

"the KTM550 makes a KX500 seem like it has Dom Delouise stuffed in the airbox".

Yes, Suzuki did make an RM 500. The CR will be most reliable, the KX will be the most powerful, i would personally just leave the Suzuki alone, because i think the last RM 500 they made was like in 85.

How about a KTM 550 2 stroke water cooled,I had the MXC dirt bike in a 95 year model and It was brutal. Air cooled motors would probably be easier to get in there . You can usually find some open bikes that are pretty decent shape that are pretty old since alot of people cant use the power the things put out.

Welcome brother I have a '94 KTM 550. It walks over any other open classer. These folks have no idea!!!

Here is an interesting comparison of the CR 500, KX 500 and the KTM 550 on repeated runs up a very wet sand dune at St. Anthony's. This is where true HP is measured. Riders all tried each bike. This is from my buddy over at the 550 thead at KTMtalk.com:

Here is a big dune that is called Devils Dune. It doesn't look it from the picture but it is long and steep. The lower turnouts about halfway up the hill are from Buddy's cousin Ty and his 250. The turnouts that are about 80% up the hill are from Buddy and Bill's 500s. The turnouts at the very top of the dune are from me and my 550. I had them himarked by 30 feet. The sand was very wet and climbing took a bunch of power. There was a dune down there that I couldn't make it over this particular time because it was so soft at the top. After I sunk it up there I found out why it was so soft. There was a layer of about six inches of snow and sand was piled on top of that.

Parts are easy....just slightly expensive. Pistons kits are $200 bucks.

Great bikes and enjoy em while you can!! Actually parts are not that bad and the motors run forever!!

I have friend that went 7 racing seasons on the original top end. He was a desert racer.

It always helps to have a spare 550 laying around:

Seriously though...just let me blabber a bit. I totally love these bikes and the Quadzilla. I'll keep going on and on. Just someone shut me up please!!

I love my LT500 also!!! Really fun and the power is addicting! They dont make em like they used too. lol

As far as more power between the kx ans cr, I have raced lots of cr500 based trikes and quads but never been beat by one of those on my kx trike.

Man that KTM looks good with the updated plastic.Mine was the purple and white with an fmf pipe.Guy that were used to the fastest street bikes would take it for a spin and about have an ulcer when they came back. Its the only bike I ever had that would compress the shock an inch by blipping the throttle. The cr500s I have ridden werent even close. My Old cr480 felt like a 250 compared to the ktm. A guy would probably have a hard time finding a 550 to get the motor out of for a 3 wheeler but it would be a rocket ship .

Dufrain,

check out our 550/440 thread at KTM talk:

http://ktmtalk.com/index.php?showtopic=76665&st=0

Good to hear your comparisons with the other big bores. Most people don't realize the power of these bikes.

Mine is a 1994 and was very similar to your '95 with the exception of the forks.

Oh I shared your comments with the 550 guys on the thread!!

Great stuff.

man go with the HONDA cr500.Ive heard alot of good things about those motors and they're pretty easy to get parts for unlike the kx500

Parts are just as easy to get for the kx as cr. Its the same motor that has been in use since 1989! The kx was also in production longer when it died in 2003 or 4.

The parts are probably easy but it doesnt matter how easy they are when you have no money in your pocket from buying a couple of ktm parts. So definetly stick with the 500.They might not be as fast and even so they're not much slower but they're a lot more efficient than the ktms

I would go with either the KX or CR whichever comes along first or what you prefer. If you can find the last year of the KX 500 ( 2004 ) throw one into a trike and let the butt kicking begin. :w00t:

Darius1502

Yeah I would also go with the CR or KX. I just wanted everyone to know that in terms of power...the KTM 550 is IT.

I think that motor belongs in a 2 wheeler though.
