Does a DG pipe "eat" your rings ??

Ok I bought my 200x in july I think. and well its burning oil pretty good.. The guy that had it last always changed the rings like every 6 months ?? .. When I bought it he said there was only about 2 or 3 tanks on those set of rings. Well I have about 10 more into it, and umm its burning oil.. He told me because of the lack of back pressure that the rings go fast. Is this right or ?? something else wrong?

i dont belive a lack of back pressurte would make the rings go bad..it would fry the valves...as for new rings..if he did it every six months..if he honed it every time it could have caused the cylender to just ware too much and if you change them again i would suggest a bore and new piston...check the valves too

cause rings dont eat up over lack of back pressure never heard that one before. make sure its not trailprotrailpro valves if it smokes when your applying throttle its the valves if it smokes when u let off the throttle its rings.

Rings wear because of friction, heat, and hours of use. The pipe has nothing to do with it, unless it has been improperly carbureted as a result of the pipe. Maintenance intervals should be based on hours of use, and not on time elapsed. That he did it every six months, with knowing how much he rode it is pretty useless information. Also rings are not the only factor in looking at premature loss of compression. As was mentioned, it may need a bore job, and valve maintenace may have been ignored.

hey chris i think he lied to you when he said the rings were changed every six months,that be just plain stupid to waste money like that,i think the ringd are pretty worn,have you had the topend opened up yet?I 'd just buy new rings hone the cylinder and see if you can get away with that..

sounds like the valve guides are shated up. My xr did the same thing i changed the guides and all the seals, and it fixed the problem so check them out two ,That might be the majority of your problem

you have this exactly backwars on how to tell what is causing the smoke. a leaking valve seal will smoke when you let off the gas.

OK listen. the guy either bs'ed you....
OR..... the bike is running way rich or way lean which is making the engine run too hot and thats whats burning up your rings. i ran a STRAIGHT PIPE on a 200m for years, thats what i used in the mud, and riding THROUGH 3 or 4 feet of water pretty much using it as a boat, with no air filter.... it was a big time beater.. and guess what, it ran for years, and ALWAYS ran fine. no smoke. you know why? jetting was right and i maintained it between awful beatings. (still cant figure out why it didnt blow up through the abuse) but what im saying is, no way a 80's honda 4-stroke is having these problems unless the jetting is way off, or the exhaust valve has tons of carbon build up. heres the things id check first......
CHECK THEM IN ORDER. i listed the possible problems in easiest to check order. easiest to hardest.
do the first 2 at least. carb jetting is probably your problem

1. take off your pipe completely and make sure its not clogged up (sounds stupid but you never know)
2. carb jetting
3. head valves
4. take off your cylinder and check for damage
