I recently purchased a motor for my 85/86 ATC250R project and the guy said the believes it is an87 or 88. How can I determine the exact year of the motors manufacture?

All I have is that 1988 engine serial #'s were between TB06E8100014 and TB06E8109454. 1988 Frame serial #'s were between TE120JK200011 and TE120JK209449. That is the only year that I have found right now. I had a list for 1985-1989 ATC and TRX 250r's but cant find it now. Hope this helps :-P

Skippy,
Are you talking about the intake port? I have one that's split and one that's not. What's the significance of the split?

This is a picture of the motor I acquired. Won it in an Ebay auction. Is the serial supposed to be in the box below the shifter? Its got TBO6E- and then the box is empty? Is there anyway to tell the year of manufacture with this info?

The TB06E matches the beginning of the 1988 serial # that I posted earlier but I forgot if the different years start out differently than that?

This is from the Honda Identification Manual:

ATC250r 1985 - TB06E-2400001~
ATC250r 1986 - TB06E-2500001~
TRX250r 1986 - TE12E-1000001~
TRX250r 1987 - TE12E-8000001~
TRX250r 1988 - TE12E-8100001~

Well as for parts&such that should be close enough huh? There wasnt any drastic changes until 89 huh? The guy I got the motor from guarantees the motor and tranny to be in good working condition although he was under the impression that it was either an 87 or 88. This was a back up motor and as has been completely gone through. You can plainly see the gaskets are new. I am gonna post a couple more pics of it just in case anyone is interested.

87-89 had the split in it... as oppose to the no split, an open chamber... in the cylinder... 85-86 didnt they were wide open... didnt make too much difference, but just to identify, also i saw one of your bolts was snapped on the left case, surely get that fixed, so you dont lose a chain and lose the case, they can use old clutch basket and weld a tab on there, tap it out and you will have two case saver bolts then, its surely worth it.. just dont crank of those two bolts!

also get yourself an 89 clutch update kit from service honda, part number 06220-hb9-305 $48.12, to update that for smoother action, get some new seals off ebay, and then you wont have any problems!

In order to get a bike registered without a serial number on the engine case in California, we have to prove that it was purchased legally. Then the CHP will install a new serial number. Otherwise they think the engine is stolen.

Looks like you had a hot spot on the kicker side of the case, just below and in between the clutch oil filler cap and water pump.
