How do you know that it isn't getting enought air? Maybe it is just getting too much gas?

dude...i feel for ya. i had so many problems with mine i bought a brand new one. ran good for a couple days then crappy again. i agree with hot rod. clean or replace the air filter. also buy a clymer manual and follow the instructions to clean the carb.

Mine is the same way. Sometimes it won't start, and the second I take out the air cleaner, it fires first pull. I don't even have to choke it at all.

It might be getting too much gas that when you take the filter off everything balances out. Check the posistion of the clip on the needle valve and that you have the right jet sizes. If you haven't cleaned your carb out you may want to do that too. Just shoot a little carb cleaner in every hole you can find. Take out the idle screw and the air pilot screw and clean those as well. Good luck.
