I bought a 1985 350X and the back of the crank case had been liquid welded, because it got cracked, there is a little bit of oil coming through. the guy i bought it from didn't say anything about it when i bought it, and has given me a lot of headaches because he is not very open to helping me out, but finally after alot of convincing he says he needs a tranny from an 1986 and he says he will give me the crankcase from that, but doesn't know if the diferent years will match up, so i was wondering if anyone out there could let me know if the 1986 crankcase would fit on the 1985 motor. thanks

all that would be different possibly is the clutch cable routing is different on the 86 modles. it comes around the left side of the motor ... and then goes to the right side case clutch lever. it won't make any difference on your 85 x ... cable routing will still be the same. in fact ,,,, i think the 86 routing is on the inner side case ( left side ).
my 1985 350x had the chain go thru the outer part of the outside case and i had it welded back into shape ,,, no problems now.
kinda weird how honda cast the outside case ,,,, leaving a big air pocket gap in there and all. if they had not done so it would have been bullet proof. if you get to hold one in your hand ( sounds like you will ) you will see what i'm talking about.
the case savers are a real good investment ( stock ones never seem to be in place for some reason ) and not at all that hard to fab one up if your handy enough.
sounds like this person is running you around alot ,,,

thanks john that's really helpful, today i actually just put the machine in the top of my dad's shop so i can start doing a complete rebuild, i bought the 350x and have literally pushed the machine around more than i have actually driven it, but by next spring i will have a sweet machine , with practically a brand new top and bottom end in it, so then it will last a long time because i have no plans of beating the crap out of it.Do you know where to go for little specialty nuts and bolts and stuff for the 350x? do you have to buy it from a dealer or is there other stores i can get them from? i thought Canadian Tire up here in Canada could order ATV parts but maybe not.
thanks dave

i got most all of the nuts and bolts i have ever needed from the hardware store up town. they have a great selection of metric nuts + bolts + washers.
like most folks , i have a nuts and bolts tray that is probbly the most valuable junk box i own.
i just put all new stainless hex type of case bolts on my 350x ,,, got it off of ebay for rather cheap ( needed to get a few different lengths from up town though ).

thanks john, i will be sure to go to the hardware store when i need bolts, i hate going to the dealers and paying such a huge price just because their HONDA. As for the pictures, Mr. 84 250R, I have them on a digital camera , i just have to sit down and try figure out how to get them on here . i will probably have them on here by tonite. I got the top of my shop all set up to rebuild my 350X, i started taking a few things apart. Now i am just waiting to get the cases from the guy i bought it from and then i will send the motor away and fix up some stuff on the frame.

I made a simular deal with a guy for a Polaris 3 Wheeler a couple years ago. The machine need more than I expected but I have Never Ever found a sweeter machine. My only regret is not buying / getting it sooner. Thinking of that deal, I need to make a MI run to see John's 350x. I need to see what he might be able to use for it. ;)

it's a major learning curve iggy ,,, you aren't the only one that has troubles learning it.

sorry about that guys , but i finally figured out how to make the pictures smaller, so here is the picture of my 350x, as you will notice i think it has a 250R headlight on it so it looks a little different, but i am going to look around for a stock 350X headlight because they look pretty mean, and if I see one for cheap i will pick it up but it isn't bothering me too much yet. Tonite I just finished taking the motor out so it is all stripped down, now i just gotta wait for the cases to come in so i can get it rebuilt. dave

Looks like a complete 250R front end... 350X was a leading axle. Is that seat say HONDA on the back? Is it mint? I have a mint 85 seat and am looking for a mint 86 seat like that. Let me know if you'd like to 'swap'. I got one of the last white 86 OEM fenders from HONDA before they went DISC. and all I have are 2 mint 85 seats. Would like one with 'ATC" on the side instead of '350X'
As far as the side cases go, which one is broke? Usually it's over by the chain. The 85 and 86 should be interchangable. The clutch covers aren't, but you can swap out the clutch cable arms to swap them back and forth. (Been there... done that...) As far as the cable routing, the brackets from a 86 motor will mount on to a 85 motor and vise versa.
If you are going to 'rebuild' the entire motor, it might be more economical to search for a crate motor on ebay. I picked up a fresh, never used motor for $800 (lil above average, but I made some great deals on other 350X NOS OEM parts from the same guy..) By the time you look at bearings, pistons, cams, valves, clutch plates, etc and a side case for yours, you can easily spend a chuck of cash getting up there! Sometimes, they even have the kickstarter, front sprocket/cover, oil cooler, and carbs on them!

that is a good point bruce to buy a new motor, when I ripped the motor out of the frame i noticed alot of stuff that was wrong like alot of stripped bolts, the case that is cracked is the left side case by the front sprocket, and also the main case, where the bottom motor mount is. How many pieces are to the case, 3 ?, a left side, right side, and a middle part, i am not sure, i haven't looked at it too closely. i just sent it to a guy that rebuilt my brother's motor, he is going to crack it open and see if the inside looks as bad as the outside of the motor. And these crate motors you were talking about, i saw one on ebay and they wanted 1400 dollars american, which is like around 2000 canadian money, and then 55 dollars US to ship it, and then they wouldn't even ship it to canada so i would have to go to the states, so i was wondering, do they all run about that kinda money. and lastly my seat has honda written on the back, if i am not mistaken, and nothing on the side of the seat, it is in good condition but has two small holes on it and the guy i bought it from has put nice blue tape on it so it looks pretty good. and you thought that my 350x has a 250R front end also? it could be , which makes me think, the steering stem bearing is very sloppy, but could that be because of the 250R front end, not fitting right on the 350X frame? if you wouldn't mind answering these questions it would be great

I have many 350x headlights. I have one on each of my 350x's and one of each on my 250R's. Wanna trade? Check the tight ness of the nut on the steering stem. I have seen the whole R front end on 350x's. It will work, you may need new bearings. Just let me know on the headlight.

hey mark, i would love to trade that 250R headlight for a 350x one. Just to let you know it looks better on the picture than it does up close, all though it has no cracks or anything you can tell it has just been freshly spray painted, there are some little divots in it, it isn't perfectly smooth like it would from the factory, but the rubber straps to connect it to the forks are not broken at all, and the clear lens has no cracks. What does your 350x light look like?

oh and bruce i wasn't even thinking, but today I looked at my seat on the 350x and it has ATC written on the side, I didn't think it did, but i never really looked at it that closely. i was just thinking what you were talking about my seat having "atc" written on the side, and then i looked at it. and i also noticed it has three little holes in it not two. Does anyone know if you can fix up a couple tiny holes in a leather seat like that, other than putting a little tape on it?

Well I have 3 very good and one that is in fair shape, it has been painted and the straps are good. It has the wiring that you'll need to splice back to your wiring harness. It has good lenses and good bulbs. That one is in similiar condition to yours.
Dammit!

Here's some headlights.
Actually can you still buy these? They are kinda cool in a goofy looking kind of way.

Yes... there is some guy that keeps trying to sell a crate motor with like a $1,432 opening bid or something.... if you notice, it never sells!!!!
I got mine for $800 which is about average, but made some great deals from the same guy on OEM fender, toolbox w/tools-jets from HONDA, rear axle, rotors, sprockets, CDI's, etc so it washes out some.
I'll pass on the seat.... really looking for a mint '86 one.
Thanks!

sounds good bruce, i figured you'd want one in mint shape, my 350x is going to be used for riding more than a showbike for now so the seat cover is still good enuf for that. thanks for advice on crate motors, the guy that i sent my motor to, said he would crack it open to see how bad it looks in side, and if it is going to be too much money to fix i will find a crate motor
