The guy down the road is selling a perfect condition 1985 tri z for $1 660 USD. it has new barke disc and pads and three new tryes.
Do you think this is a good deal?
and also are these trikes suitable for riding trails. i.e. can they handle
sand
foot and a bit of water
mud
hills
thanks alot

Yes, that is not a bad deal on a Z. They are very versatile machines. Try snapping a picture if you can. Those have to be pretty rare down there, haven't heard of many.

Itll make a fine trail bike, As for price, you really cant compare to what they go for here in the US. Personally, I think $1600 is a just a little steep for here, unless its in super nice original condition, but that may be a super bargain there. Maybe some of your locals can help you out.

$1600 doesnt seem all that pricey for a machine that hard to come by. Especially if its in good condition. Good luck, GREG

I loved my Z and if it's "showroom condition" then that's a good buy almost anywhere.

i say buy that Z and oh yeah about spend your money on an R. no way R's are a dime a dozen and guess what they don't look half as cool as a Z i think Z's the by far the coolest lookin trike ever made. i'm not saying r's are junk or anything but they are not as cool as a Z. oh yeah i'd buy a T3 (86-87) before i bought an R anyway

does anyone find the fuel tank at the rear a hindrance or a good thing what about the shocks, are they good because ive seen quite a few Z's with the warrior shock upgrade.

i'm new to the TRI-Z thing but i'm a yamaha junkie anyway. i'm not sure if it hinders anything but the hidden tank looks pretty damn cool.

If you look at my Z pic on page 1 of this thread you'll see a Banshee shock in mine. It's easy to install and is a lot better than the warrior shock. The rear tank is cool, no major hindering. I did move it 1/2" to make room for the piggy back ressy on the banshee shock but it was really easy.

It does make it a little light in the front end but nothing that is not manageable....The warrior shock(from what I hear) is pretty much an almost stock replacement(don't know for sure as I don't have one) but a Craptor shock(01 only) is an upgrade as it has 2 more inches of travel...I will let you know as soon as mine arrives how it rides...As to the stock shocks being junk,,,,I'm sure they weren't 20 yrs ago when they were new...The only problem with them is they are a sealed unit and cant be rebuilt...At least that is what they said when I took my in....They had mine for a month before they decided to give up on it... :( There is an outfit in AZ called Marvin Shaw that will make you a custom Billet one for the Z, Nitrogen Charged no Res. for I think 220 bucks....I am ordering one from them this week...Will keep you up to date on that also... :beer

stock rear shocks are not junk. Mine is in great shape, and Ive jumped the crap outta mine, and have never bottomed out. Im talking 86 though, and they have a tiny bit more ground clearence then an 85.

Sounds like a decent deal but that's no reason not to try and get a better one. ALWAYS make a lower offer. I'd low ball him and offer $1200 cash and see what he says then go up in $100 increments until he agrees. Of course, every hundred bucks you go up you have to have a more pained expression on your face like he's killing you. :)
Z's are definitely fun bikes. I prefer R's but I've had some fun times on all kinds of different bikes. Z's seem to love sand dunes. Not too fond of snow but I doubt you get much of that down there. 8]

Hey Ned is that trike $1600 Aussie or American. If its Aussie i would snap it up asap. Especially if its in that good condition. I saw an 86 tri-z here in NSW go for $2000 on ebay. It also was in mint condition. If i had a spare $2k i wouldve bought it.

The Warrior shock is not an upgrade. Its a good replacement thats actually available. Yamaha shocks perform as well as any other. Their bad reputation is because of their short lifespan. 3-4 years of hard riding, and they are usually toast. They are rebuildable, but used shocks are usually a lot cheaper than a quality rebuild. The best upgrade is an aftermarket Banshee shock with a remote resevoir that is not piggybacked on the shock base. Works makes such an animal.

I dont think piggyback shocks are a good idea, one hard landing, and bye-bye fuel tank.

A warrior shock would be almost the same as stock...Banshee I dont know, probably an upgrade, However, a 01 Raptor Shock(only yr. with Remote Resi) is an upgrade with 2 more inches of Travel and also rebuildable....I have also done some checking around and I talked to a person at Marvin Shaw Shocks in AZ....They make a shock for the Z Custom to your specs with no Resi,(Nitrogen Charged) Polished Aluminum for only 220 bucks....Soooo,,,,If Bling Bling and New is what you want I would go there....Im having them do up a shock for my other Z....
