View Full Version : Trike pushes way to much

My trike doesn't handle for crap. It's homemade out of a street bike. In the front I have a dirtbike tire, and out back I have 2 12" wide tractor ag tires. (pattern is similar to this >>>>>>>) The rear is approx. 52" wide. It's not tippy at all, in fact, it's very stable. However, when I turn, it pushes like crazy and rips up the lawn/driveway/wherever. I don't think there's anything I can do, it's just a solid rear axle. Basically, the only way I can turn it is to tip it up on 2 wheels. I was just wondering if anyone had any idea's for me. Thanks. :TrikesOwn

first off you arent gonna get mouch traction with a dirtbike tire on the front. put a 3wheeler front end on or widen the front forks and put a 3wheeler tire on the front. i think that would help.

and to do this all you need to do is get a set of wider custom tripple trees made

Ya, I looked into a real 3 wheeler front end, but I don't want to lose the telescopic front end. I guess widening is the only other option. I thought about going to 2 front wheels, but that would be a huge hidious thing.

I have pictures, and I have a scanner, but I have no idea how to get them on a site. A few posts down I give some more details on it. Right now I need to reattach the wheelie bars, I came off a jump a little nose high and ripped 'em off, D'OH!

Anything with a wide solid axle will tear it up on the turns becuase the tires have two different turning radiuses. One tire has to slip. If you need to have pics posted and need help with the files, feel free to email them to me. I can size them and post them for you if you need. Many of us are always willing to help to get more pics up. herefoxy@hotmail.com

Yes, it's 400cc. It's very fast, actually I am going to gear it down some. I rarely get in 5th gear, it's pretty scary at that speed. I would like a slower 'woods speed' too. Tonight I'll try and get my pictures up.

Welcome to the boards for starters! Great looking "trike" ya got there as well. I would definately recommend getting some custom triple-trees made for a wider tire....or even comverting over to a 350X front end.

Ya, I pretty much knew when I started welding the rear end that turning wouldn't work out too well. As soon as I find a suspended set of front forks and a wide tire, I'll do that. But, I still don't think it'll turn too well. Remember, it's still like 52" wide with nasty rear tires.

thats your problem i think .... its the rear tires .. they grab .. you need a tire that will slip some .. you will be able to turn sooo much better.

Ya, but I spend a lot of time in my swamp, so I REALLY need those tires. I guess I can live with brown stripes in my lawn.

How does that do in the mud? How much does it weigh? :) I love it man, nice work!

It does AWESOME in the mud, I can't wait to see what it does in the snow. I'd say it weighs like 400 lbs, which for a 3 wheeler is a friggin' tank. I thought that the skinny tires would stink in the mud/standing water, but it actually does great because it's so tall. Today I finished putting the three fenders on, I'll post pictures of that soon. I like the minimallistic style, but I got sick of being "deutched with mud". (chirs farley quote)
