View Full Version : Same old paddle question but...

Where I live dune season is @ least 2 months away but start'n to get ready now so...
To the age old question, and sorry but these are all realted to my decently moded 85 250R or equivalant 2 stroke power plant trikes, would I like the V shape paddle better than the straight ones I've been run'n or not?
Let me claify my question even more. I run 20/10/8 8paddle haulers right now & love shootn hills. Now when it comes down to it, I love to roll the large bowls and roost around the tops of them too & damn if it aint kinda hard to slip that ass end around sharply when I want to without just launch'n over the tops!?!? So does anyone run the new SkatTrack Vs and am I going to get better all around feel with a trike like mine with them or what? Will I really lose all that much of my "Shee Eat'n" climb'n ability? Is this just an insainly insignaficant question ;)
And another one while I'm @ it... I have been run'n a baldie front this whole last dune season & found it to be interesting to say the least... and well I got used to it, & it looks cool but wouldn't a Mohawk give me ALOT more control?
Sorry for the long post but ya gotta remember I've got over 20 years of questions built up from the lack of being involved with a board like this... :D

Can't answer your paddle question well as I've never ran them but V's are more of a sliding sidehilling type dune tire that allow alot more slideability over the straight paddle. Dunno about how much hillshooting ability you would sacrifice with them.
A mohawk tire would definately give you more control and a stock style tire like a Front Max would give you even more without too much added weight.

Straight paddles definitley hook up better. I've run both and just switched back to haulers for that reason, but the V's hook up well and might turn just a tad better, especially under power. I just prefer to be able to have an extra edge on Bansheeps when hill shooting.

I thught Sand Skate's were Skat Trak Tires....If your lookin for the hole shot you gotta stay with them Haulers....For cruising around on the pipe and shootin some Bowls...You will have better luck with the V's you are talking about or something similar...Anything but a Straight Paddle for playing....Remember to....Skat Trak is the lightest tire out there....Easy To spin and Throw the ROOST!!!! And if you are wanting more control in the front then a Mowhawk will work just fine....If you have the stock tire..You could take it to someone and just have the Mowhawk made...Just shave the tire....Save some bucks....That just my .02 though....Good luck

The September issue of Dirt wheels has a paddle tire shoot out, READ IT!
I have always ran 8 paddle haulers. I just bought some "The Trakker" paddles this spring, handling is perfect with them. I can go out on the flats and do tight doughnuts all day long, but they are terrible for drag racing.
I think after last months ride at sahara I will never run those tires again. I know I loose tons of handling characteristics with the haulers but I'm willing to loose it while gaining the power and speed in the drags. I've learned how to throw the trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro end of my trike around while riding trails.
I soon plan on buying a set of Skat Trak Edge 10 paddle. I am hoping with them I can keep the same drag racing perfromacne and maybe gain a little on the handling department.

First of all Yes She Does :D
Second of all I never said anything about shaving a Paddle, what I was referring to is the front tire..Shaving it into a Mohawk...
People do that around here all the time ON their enduro cars...They have to shave them down to like 2/32 to be able to run them...It can be done if you know the right group of people...

The Sept issue of Dirt Wheels states that Skat trak and whoever builds Sand Skate tires will custom cut or groove tires for you.

Not sure what 'The Trakker' s are but get that they are a V from ya on that one. Just not a shaved / light weight one right?
I've got some Geckos but they R for runn'n up in the mountains. (Cinders ORV Park in Flagstaff)

So if you CAN whip that booty around then why R U still gett'n new ones?

YES the Edge 10s might be the answer!?!? That's exactly what I wanna know before spend'n the cabage so when U do run em let us know. What's really gonna make me sick is that a pair of slightly used ones just went for $150 on ebay :Evil
Thanks for ALL the great info everyone, that's exactly what I needed... well cept for nobodys ever run a set before
P.S. definately get'n a front 'hawk' before I hit the sand again!

AZ250R, Those V 10's that went on ebay for $150 were mine. I sold them because the haulers hook up so much better. They throw a hell of a roost all the time and as long as you can whip the booty around, I think they're worth the loss in turning/handling.

OK, that's cool mang, but did "smokinwrench" buy them then? Cause if he didn't, and is gonna get some he sure missed out on a GOOD deal.
So you'd just stick with the haulers, & since I already got em... well... guess I'm set then. Well cept that I'd like to have 10in rims instead of the 8s, anyone got a pref on that issue whos runn'n Haulers?
Whats the paddle count on the haulers you're runn'n? can't tell from your avatar there Sandman.

From what I have been told from a friend who Drags once a month for the last 25 yrs....The bigger the rim and tire = too much flotation..I dont know from experience, that is just what he has said...

My V's and haulers are both 10 paddle, 20 10 10's. Smokinwrench wasn't the buyer. The 10's will turn a tad better because they're lower profile, they won't spin on the wheel due to more surface contact with the wheel and they're better looking.

OK.. so I WILL be upgrading to the 20x??x10 10paddle haulers... what the heck, it's only money right!?!? I put in the width ??s cause I like the look of 11s if thats available or you tell me that's not what I want???
I did have problems spin'n the tire on the rims, when I've been whip'n that trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro, so the 10in rims will be a performance upgrade for sure then! :beer
