I have had this problem a few diffrent times, it first started when I rebuilt the engine. After ripping the engine out five times (seriously), and trying diffrent things, I finally noticed that my cam bering was shot, it had grooves in it, looked burnt, it was bad. After replacing the cam bering and the whole cam itself, I finally thought I had the problem figured out, and then it happened again today.
The top end of the motor seems to get real hot real fast, you ride it for less than 10 minutes, and the thing is like fiery hot, if you touched it, it would be like touching a very hot frying pan. I thought somthing might be up with my piston and cylinder, so I tried 3 diffrent cylinders, and pistons, and this time I put in a big bore kit, because I thought it would just work this time after fixing that cam problem. Every time the same thing happened, but when I ripped it apart, there was no damage to the piston or cylinder at all. I thought it might be my valves, so I adjusted the rocker arms to 8mm (spec settings) and no, that didnt do it. It seems like when you start off, with the motor cool, it runs pretty decent, but as soon as it starts to get hot, you hear this really bad noise, like a rattling almost. This happened even before I had adjusted my rocker arms. The engine dosent smoke. I even tried 2 stroke oil in the gas, and no go. There are two dowel oil pins on the bottom and two on the top of the cylinder head where the oil is pumped to the head, correct? It looked like that was right, because the other two holes on the top and bottom dont have grooves for the dowel to sit on, and they look smaller. The 85' 200x also got a valve job during the rebuild, so Im pretty sure they must be working properly.
My carb was at the same settings as it was when it was running before I tore it apart the second time it locked up, then I messed with that little screw near the bottom, which is the air/fuel mixture, and now I dont know what stock setting is..
If anyone knows of what could cause the problem, I would greatly appreciate some help. Any good idea will be accepted, and I will try it. Sorry for such a long thread, you must be tired of reading all that.

If I have read correct you had a cam problem and you fixed it. When the engine siezes now does the cam still look good. If it looks good and the engine siezed since you fixed it I would rule out an oil pressure problem. I also believe you said that it siezed and there was no damage to the piston. Believe me, if the piston siezes the engine there will be damge to the piston and rings. Since you have no damage on yours I am going to have to say you are having crankshaft problems.

I would seriously check out your oil pump and the passageways up to the cylinder head. Check the passageways in the right side crankcase cover also. How do the rotors in the oil pump look? When the engine is runnung, loosen the right rear cylinder head cap nut and if oil starts to flow out the oil pressure there is probably ok. I had this problem and the passage ways were clooged with sludge.

I would check your oil pump as well. You could also have the fuel/air mixture off which can make the engine run hot. Check your carb while you are at it.

Exactly what does the rattling noise sound like? And where is it comeing from? And what kind of big bore kit do you have and where did you get it? My 84 X doesnt get hot fast takes along time or going slow in mud but it makes a clicking noise and i dont know what it is.

... sounds to me like you're running too lean (that rattling is probably pinging). Try upping the Main by 1 - 2 sizes and adjusting the needle clip richer. The correct fuel mixture is the key to cooling in any engine ... air, or water cooled. Its actually is responsible for almost 80% of it.

What is the spark plug color look like (black, tan, or white)? I would defintly check for oil pressure at the head like samster143 said because if I am guessing right the noise you are hearing is a fast pace knck which means valve train. Let us know what the spark plug looks like and we'll go from there.

Hey I just rebuilt my top end with higher compression piston and bored out .020 over.... and put on a large diameter Cobra header pipe and muffler last summer. I started up and it over heated and pinged really bad..... I had to move the needle up (clip down) on the main needle to richen the mixture....my 200x was running WAYYYYY too lean and that was the only problem... any oversized muffler or higher compression or larger piston requires you to make the mixture richer (more fuel).... hope that helps!!

The plug looked tanish color. How do you check the oil pump, and where is it located on a 185s bottom end? Which way is leaner/richer? If a passageway was clogged, how would you unclog it?

I am not 100% sure weather the 200X has an external oil line or not but if it does it is a line that comes from the clutch cover and goes to the head. If you have this what you need to do is loosen the bolt from the line at the head starte the trike and see if oil comes out. If you have a good amount of oil coming out the oil pump and the line is working properly. If you are getting oil to the top of the head I would have to say you are running to lean and would try uping your main jet in the carb.

NO, the 200x does not have en external line....

your plug is fine its suposed to be tanish color means you have the right fuel mixture.

Where would the oil pump be located on a 185/200s bottom end then? Thats what I have on my 200x (185s bottom end w/ 200x top end) I know for a FACT that it is NOT getting oil to the head now, because I loosened up some head bolts, and no oil anywhere, so I'll check all passageways, and the pump. Would the oil pump be located behind the right side case then? What does it look like? I have the motor out of the frame, and ready to be taken apart. Someone help me out!

The oil pump should be right under the centripetal clutch on the 185 bottom end. It looks like a meat cutter kinda. sept it has gears in itand is covered by a aluminum plate
