Well, personally I wash my trike all the time with the power washer, without worrying about anything, and it's alright...
And about your painting over chrome parts...personally i would sandblast them, to make sure the paint sticks to it....but I must admit I wouldn't paint over the nice look of chrome. :D

Its a possibility but i doubt it chroming facilities are usual y pretty big. They have the copper, nickel, and nickel chrome, acid, soap solution tanks. Also alot of them inhouse polish sand and restore the part. Just saying if it was done itd be awesome but chrome shops are pretty big facilities.

If the chrome isn't flaking and only some minor pits, you can give it a good scuff with sandpaper to give paint some adhesion.

If it's poor chrome and flaking, I would get it stripped at a plating shop. They won't charge you much to remove the plate layers and get it back to raw steel.

The expense in chrome plating isn't the plating, it's the polishing time that goes with the process. Powdercoat should be cheaper but they'll most likely want it stripped back to bare steel to do that process.
