I've used 60grit to start with, but that was some pretty serious rust. You don't have to have it in gear to sand it. Just get a piece of sand paper that is about 5 inches long or so, put it under the axle and grab both ends and move your hands up and down. Very quick and makes it look a lot better.

Wire wheel for a long time, and then primed and spray painted, it will get chipped, scratched u name it, but over all it looks a lot better!

Actually scratch that, I had a friend sand blast it actually, came out great! :TrikesOwn

wire wheel looks good, a powdercoated axle would be great.

Make sure when your done sanding you either paint it or clear coat it.

i would sand blast it, then paint it, then get some sand paper and go over the rough spots and then paint it again. continue that till it fits your needs. And i woundnt powdercoat an axle, you heat the thing up and are not going to ever have a strong axle.

Why would you need to paint or clear coat the axle after sanding? I'm assuming you mean for rust prevention. I did mine quite awhile ago and have had no problems with rust. After every ride my wheeler gets detailed and the axle gets a coat of wd-40, so that might have something to do with it. If you paint it wouldn't it get chipped off easily?

We did mine and I did have problems with rust. It was only surface rust, but I have a fetish against rust. So I guess it depends on the area. I have used a dremel, it is time consuming cause its small. What worked really well was a regular drill. You can buy those buffing and sanding things that kinda glue to a wheel, like a hand grinder but you use it with the drill, its a slower, more controllable quick speed. Of course you have to use the right grits of paper.

Pics dont do it justice but everything in the pic is Sandblasted,Powder Coated then Powder Coated Clear.. The Clear Does Actually dull the the finished product a little but I like it....I say,,,,,If you have the money,,,,Powder Everything
