The 85 had a different clutch cable route than the 86.
Different wheel styles between the 2 years.
Different cam chain tensioners between the 2 years.
Different rear caliper mounts between the 2 years.

The triple tree on the 86 is black where the 85 is silver and is suposed to have tapered bearings unlike the 85.

Kickstarter internal gear ratio
Mounts for rear N2 canister (86 rubber all around)
Adjustment Knob on rear canister (85 black, 86 gold)
Something with the internals on the oil pump pick up (86 'improved')
Helmet Holder on 86
Tool box lid and mounting brackets (85 nose for spanner, 86 flat)
Rear carrier/Chain adjustment
Gaurd on steering stop pinch point (86)
Front brake rotor - 85 circle cuts, 86 "spiral"
Tank flares/fins - 85 larger, 86 angled back some to prevent forks catching
Frame modifications to strengthen weak spots (actually 85, 86 1st run, 86 2nd run)
Plastic Part of Exhaust Guard on headers diff. (85 4 rects, 86 3 rects.)
Exhaust mount/grab bar on frame, one has a post to hang exhaust on.
85 had 3 decal/warnings on back of tank, 86 just 2 decals.
Headlight/Kill swich assembly different fonts, 86 'knobby'
Front hub slightly different lip for the 86 rim.
Fork Boots - 85 15-16 rib bellow, 86 ~2x that.
seat cover - 85 -"350X", 86 "ATC"

Well... I'm off to bed... can't think of any more....

I know that the '85's were a 5 speed. My brother's '85 372X is only a 5 speed. I just wasnt sure if the '86's were a 6-speed...

Alright thanks alot guys, after looking at the trike some more it has 86 rear plastic and seat, 85 or 86 250r front end, with the axel behind the forks, 250r's bars and switches and light, and then everything else is 85 350x, this one is the roughest of my bunch and going to make it my beater, can i send some pics to some one so they can post them, or how do you post haven;t been able to since the site changed.

The forks themselves are interchangable - ie the brake mounts on in the same spot. The mounting bracket itself might even be the same 85 vs 86. The design difference in the calipar allows the 86 calipar more room to be removed from the bike w/o taking the front tire lose. As far as the tripples, if the toop piece is black, there's a helmet holder clip on the right, and theres a semicircular plastic gaurd on the lower triple, then they are all 86. If no gaurd and top is alum/chrome, then most likely a 85. If you have the front hub/axle/rotor, look at the rotor too. Circle cuts - 85, kinda of a curved spiral design, 86

Hope that helps. Maybe you could post a p[ic of it ??

Oh.... might be a decal on the tire side of the shocks, down on the lowers. Should say SHOWA then HA5-000 if 85 and possibly HA5-670 if 86 under it. My 85 showgirl had these decals on it, not sure if my 86 did or not. I am assuming 670 as that is the generic part code for the 86 model.

Both 85'S AND 86'S had 6 speed transmissions.

Thats sounds pretty neat. I would have to see that!

I'm not sure if it follows true with the 350X but the 200X triples changed in 86. The black can be polished away so I'm not sure if thats a dead giveaway but in 86 the steering stops on a 200X were on the outsides of the frame and not within the triples itself.

on my 86 200x the steering stops are just like the 350x, there is the block on the frame and stops on the bottom tripple, my top tripple clamp is black and the bottom is polished. Ibought my 86 200x all orignal so I know nothing ws messed with.

will the 86 caliper work with 85 forks and tripples but with an 86 front rim, hub, and adle, and disk??

350x'inNY

Yes.... read my previous post. The 85 and 86 forks are the same where the calipar bolts on.

As long as you have a 86 rim on a 86 hub you are fine. (Seems like the 86 hub wouldn't bolt onto a 85 rim if I remember right) The brake rotors are interchangable.

The helmet holder is just a piece that bolts to the top triple underneath the fork clamp bolts. A small triangular looking piece that suposse to loop the helmet fastener on. Not too functional... easier to just put onto your handlebar ends.
