Alot of people have been asking me whats involved in the 350x suspension swap. so I decided to post the details. If you are thinking of doing this conversion, you could save yourself alot of work if you bought this.Shock mount on Ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2483269062&category=43974)
Its the last one I have.

How to put a 350x suspension on your 200x

First thing you need to do is gather all the parts needed to do the swap.

Parts needed for the front...
1. forks
2. triple tree
3. front break caliper, break line and pads
4. front fender
5. headlight
6. 350x front rim, hub and axle (optional)

Parts needed for the back...
1. Rear shock
2. Modifided shock mount

Front-end
The front end swap is very easy. After you remove the 200x front-end, cut off the steering stop tray on the front head tube. Now you can install the 350x front-end. A new steering stop will need to be welded in place so that the new forks don't hit the gas tank. (See pic)
http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/muddy2OOx/images/steering+stop.jpg
Also you will notice that the bearing posts on the two tripple trees are set at different angles. the 350x tripple tree will set your forks parrellel to the head tube. The 200x forks don't run parrellel to the head tube they are set so the forks are kicked out. This is why when you add a 350x front-end you dont get a "chopper" look. The front suspension swap will add about 2" in lenth and about 2" to the height.
If you plan on re-using you 200x front rim hub and axle, you will need to cut the bushing that centers your wheel. the 200x bushing is too long and will make your wheel off center. Just cut some off and your good to go. Its not a big job, and can be done when you are ready to attach the front wheel. that way you can see exactly how much needs to be removed.

Rear-end
The rear shock swap is more dificult, only because it involves making a new mount.
One way is to convert the 350x shock mount. To do this you will have to narrow the mount so that it is the same size as the 200x mount width wise (so that it fits where it bolts on the swing-arm) The 350x mount is wider. After the mount has been narrowed it will need to be cut and a extention piece welded in place. (See pic... side by side with stock 200x mount)

I would say that about 4" is gained at the fenders. and since the 350x shock is beefier it will allow you to jump higher without bottoming out. Also riding double will no longer kill your fenders.

I recomend that if you do the 350x suspension swap, that you also add an extended swingarm and an extended axle.
It just makes sence that since you have added height to you trike that you should also add to the width (for stability porposes)

Here are a few more pics so you can compare and see how much is gained. The animated pic is without the rear shock.

no your front wheel and axle will tho. u can use the 200x master cylinder u just need a 350 caliper and line.

Hell yea, put it up there! This is the thread that I'm going to refer anyone who asks "how to". You were asking not long ago  , and probably would have loved a thread like this. :D I would suggest that you use a mild steel or chromalloy rather than stainless steel though, stainless dosent fuse well with anything other than stainless steel. So your stop might drop ;)

would this be the same process to do on a 86 200x?
Not sure about the 86-87, but, that question has been asked before, and I think it didn't get answered? I know a guy who has an 86 and I will make a point to check it out the next time I see him.

Sorry, off-topic question coming: What kind of tires are those on the back? They look similar to Spider Trac's. 2-ply? 4-ply?

Muddy....Thanks for this tech article. Very helpful. The link to the shock mount on eBay no longer works (old I guess). Can you advise what you were recommending here for the shock swap?

I'm very keen to do this mod and if I can avoid cutting and welding a dogbone, I'm all for that! Any help appreciated.

The link to the Ebay auction was for a newly fabricated mount.
I wanted to make a completely new linkage for my 200x, so while I was at it I made a few extras. I put one on Ebay and sold some on the boards. It's easy to make one if you have the right equipment. Or, You could talk to a machinist and have one made in billet aluminum.

I'd post a couple of pics of the ones that I made but I can't find any at the moment. If you need and help figuring thing out let me know. Meanwhile I'll look for those pics.

Cool, that would be great, thanks. I guess I could fabricate one too. If you cut and welded the 350X one, what sort of weld did you use? Tig, Mig? Also, am I right in thinking the top 350X mount will slot straight into the 200X frame mount?

Thanks.

Muddy, Would you have the dimensions for the hole spaces (center to center) for all 3 on your modified dogbone?

I'm going to fabricate a linkage from scratch and this would be a big help.

Thanks

I purchased one of the modified shock mounts from you, and it does not fit. it hits the cross brace of the swingarm, and doesn't line up right on the swingarm. with one mount bolted, the other doesn't come close enough to the other hole, it's slightly off. i even tried grinding it down a bit on the inside edge of the mount, and still does not fit? can * help me muddy? i'd like to get this shock on

Can you help me leprogle with the hole spacings? I know the swingarm mount holes are 95mm apart center to center. I need the measurement from each of these holes to the center of the shock mount hole to triangulate placement for this one.

I have a shock in transit and want to get working on this mount before it arrives.

Thanks

mine doesn't fit, but i believe all * do it cut one mount off a 350x dogbone, and add an extension in between the shock hole and swingarm hole, I would cut, mount the hole with the shock mount still on, mount the cut piece, and tack the extension onto both pieces while on the swingarm, that way it would be a perfect fit.

this is a good thread..id like to do it to mine but i dont have the money, tools, or patience..its one of those 16 year old things..i can use a drill press, lathe and some other stuff that i learned in school but dont have them to use...i can weld to but dont have a welder..lol im sol

Yeah, I don't have the dogbone. I'm starting with a 2" thick block of aluminium and fabricating the entire mount from scratch. That's why I wanted the hole spacings.

leprogle, I'm really sorry to hear that it didn't fit. Must be a slight difference in our swingarms. If I'm correct the one you bought from me was the very first one that I made. In fact I believe its the one that is pictured in this thread. If it's the one I think it is I increased the size of the gusset and beefed up the welds before I sold it, that's probably the problem. I'll tell you what, If you can send me some pics of your swingarm, and the problem your having with the fit. I'll make a brand new one. I had reservations about selling that one since it was the prototype. Again, I am sorry about that.

EZ, I am sorry but I don't have the measurements that you need. But since leprogle is having problems I guess I'm going to have to break out the tools, so I'm sure I'll be able to get them to you. Or, while I'm at it I could make one for you too. I just noticed that you have a 83' 200x. I have no experience with the way the shock is mounted on that year. Probably different though? Not sure?

Ah what the hell... I guess the shop is open, If your wanting a 200x to 350x adapter mount now is the time to speak up. Email or PM me, Please don't try to place an order on this thread.

leprogle, I'll get started on yours as soon as I get those pics. I don't want to send you another one until I see Exactly what the problem is.
