well when i start my 84 250r up it will run for like 5 seconds, and if i try to give it some throttle it'll either backfire and stall, or when it revs a lillte, it would be a delayed reaction. The carb. is clean, yes it is getting gas, air filter is clean. What i'm thinking is that mabey the timing is off? If anybody has an idea of what is goin on, please let me know.

i'd start simple before ripping it apart. try checking for air leaks around the carb to head boot. you can do that by getting it started and letting it idle ( hopefully it'll stay going long enough ) and then spray starting fluid or carb cleaner around the inlet side of carb. if it revs up or dies out (depending on wich of the above you are using ) start looking for cracked carb adapters or manifold peice.
there are sevral more thinks i can think of to cause your troubles but like i said ,,,, it's best to start simple.

i spent about 20 minutes typing out decent reply about timing and in reveiwing it for spelling it ,,,, it' like i hit the disappear button ! i didn't touch nothing ,,, just went to a blank fricking screen ,,,, like saying you want to post something ??? WELLLLL yeah !
dam,,, i'm still pissed,,,, but anyway after a shower and a smoke ,,,
try timing it. you do time 2 strokes. it is a thing you do like 4 strokes from time to time ( no pun intended - i'm still pissed my play by play from clymers manual is floating around in cyber space).
take your right side cover off + line up the "f" mark with the little tit on the inner case (about 11 o'clock) being sure piston is at the very top of it's stroke.
adjust by moving stator ( loosen 3 bolts) one way or the other.
best to use a timing light with r.p.m. cranked up but sounds like you won't be able to do that ,,,,

has it been running good and just started doing this or is this the condition you got it in?

In the same spirit of keeping it simple, Id start with a clean plug, and then ask the same question as ejc042.

well i've had this engine apart many times, and i'm positive that everything inside is assembeled correctly, i had to take it apart this time because 5th gear got all screwed up, but it really started before i took it apart when i had to be towed, and had be towed through a water hole. I tore the engine apart fixed it, put it all back together, and now it's running like crap.

Are you sure the piston is on the rod in the right direction? It's usually arrow to exhaust.

yep the piston is on the rod correctly.
It looks like I might have to replace the transmission, Does anybody have 1 for sale 1981-1984 250r? E-mail me, or pm me with any info, or leads.
Thanks
