Seems there are many more 86 ATC and 86-89TRX axles available. Which ones will work with the 85 ATC250R swingarm and carrier?

What about rear shocks? Will the TRX rear shocks work with that 85 ATC250R?

On the 85 and 86 ATC The axle and shock set-up are the same. The swing arm, bearing carrier, skid-plate and brake are different.

I'm not sure about the TRX set-up. I've got an extra 86 rusted rear shock and axle that came off of a Pismo ATC.

They just need a little sand blasting and tlc.

The reason I know is becaue I have an 86 frame with an 85 swingarm, engine and assories. I snapped my 85 frame jumpping it.

85 & 86 (or 86-89 TRX) atc rear end parts are apparently not interchangable and fairly differant. Youre better off with an 86 ATC swinger ebcuase you get all the aftermarketability of the 86-89 TRX stuff!

The shocks: I am told the TRX one has a smaller stroke (thats what I call it, not sure of the corrrect term heheh) or travel so I wouldnt recommend using one. The ATC one is larger and is amde for that machine. 85 & 86 ATC shocks -are- interchangable. Im sure you could use a TRX one (theyd actually be a good way to lower the rear end maybe?) but I dont see why you wouldnt want the ATC one.

Its all about the availability. I do want to use the ATC shock now that I know there is a difference. I won an Ebay auction on an 86 rear axle for $27 assuming it would work with the 85 swingarm and carrier. If it will that part of the puzzle is in place. I will search for the ATC shock.

I think the sprocket hubs are different on the 85 to 86 ATC

So let me get this straight......the axle will work with the swingarm and bearing carrier, I just have to use 86 sproket hub, break rotor hub, and break mounting plate and all 86 break hardware? Doesnt seem to be that big of an issue as long as no modification needs to happen to make the parts fit. Can anyone VERIFY for sure if this is the case. Thanks to all of you offering help and advice.

No the axel will not fit, you have to go to an 85. Best bet is to switch for to an 86 atc swinger because of all the after markets parts are there.

I placed my 86 axle next to my 85 axle which is on my bike. I can't seem to find any differneces.

I know for a fact that the 85 and 86 have a different sproket hub, bearing carrier and caliber mounting plate. Other than that, the axles looks the same.

I'd call the Honda parts dealer and ask them how much an 85 axle is, then I would ask them does the 86 have the same part number, and is the price the same. Do your homework first, before you start spending money.

Will the 86/87 TRX swing arm work with the 85 ATC frame? Or will only the 86 ATC swingarm work?
