i have a 1985 kawasaki klt 160, and when i first got it i got it running good, then one day it just died while i was riding it. and it didn't have spark, so i took it apart to get to the flywheel and there was a paste on the flywheel (inside of it) so i figured it was shot, and the motor smoked anyway so i bought i different motor (klt185 motor, for $35) so i put that in and kept all the ignition for the 160 except the flywheel and that ran good too. but after a while it lost spark, but luckly the same guy i bought the motor from had a klt160 for parts so i bought that to ($26) so i pulled that flywheel off and put it on my good one and i had spark again. but after a while it lost spark again. and yet again there was a paste in the flywheel. you could tell it came from the magnets in the flywheel but there was no visable wear on the stator. has anyone herd of this happening before? what should i do to fix this problem? thanks for any help on this.

That paste is probably ground up metal from everywhere inside your motor...the magnets just soak it up as the oil passes by.
there is no oil where the flywheel and magnets are...
The only way oil would get in there would be if you had a bad seal, which is probably the case.
What color is this "paste"?
Are you driving through mud/water etc? your stator cover gasket could be bad, and letting all that crap in there.. that will kill your ignition quickly.

the flywheel does run in oil, or at least its not sealed from oil, i haven't been driving through water/mud, the paste is a grayish metalic color. and you can see that the flywheel has wear on it. but its like an on, off wear (not constint)

wher is the wear, whe you changed the flywheel did you change the flywheel key, the key maybe worn down to the pint wher it holds for a while and than spins freely and than rotates inside the flywheel and strips the inside of the flywheel making a bunch of metal shavings and mixing with the oil while still hot making a paste with it and holding to the flywheel. just what i have had to hear my uncle complain about with his 110 a while ago. very complexed but very possible, if you haven't changed the key try that, if it still don't work, well i dunno then call me stupid.

the flywheel is tight on the crank but i guess i should check to make sure its not wedged on tight

I'm glad mine hasn't decided to do this,,, Could the grayish paste be oil that has collected moisture from the air??

to me it looks like very fine ground up metal, mixed with oil. i assume metal is the magnet from the flywheel.

My best guess is that the gayish stuff isn't from the flywheel. It probably came from some where else in the motor. What I think is happening is that the small metal particles are some how getting into the electrical system and shorting it out. I must add this is just my theory. I could be way off.

i pulled the flywheel off today and it was tight on the crank and the key was fine. and each time it lost spark (3 times) i used the same stator, i ONLY changed the flywheel then it ran again so i don't think the metal shorted anything.
