View Full Version : `85 T3 15/38 gearing and seat questions

So I am gonna be running 18 inch tires and want to keep my top speed, maybe gain some. I know a 15 tooth front will give a high top speed but would adding a 38 tooth rear give me back low-end grunt? Or would I lose my top speed because of the 18's already making the gearing low?

My seat is missing the latch and just held on with some bolts and a makeshift poorly welded bracket. Question is where do I find an aftermarket blue seatcover for when I take the crap off and put all new brackets back?

I don't know if Ceet still has any blue covers or not. I think they still do. If not there's Hi-Flite and Travelcade. My 84 had a travelcade blue cover. It wasn't bad at all.

In my opinion, 84/85 KXTs pretty much have non-existant low-end grunt. 18" tires help to increase it some. To get some top speed back, you could leave the 13 tooth up front and just drop to the 38 tooth rear, or switch to the 15 front and leave the 42 rear. 15/38 will gear it too high in my opinion and it wouldn't be good for anything but wide open riding.

Best thing to do is just pick up a 15 cs & 38 rear sprocket and see what combination you like best.

Thanks Jeb, the Ceet site is under construction but the others are good. As for the sprockets I'll just pick up the 14 and 15 cs and a stock 42 rear to see what works best.

I'm running (or tried to run...) a 38 w/ the stock sprocket up front on my T3...

There is NO low end.... There is no chance in hell that the front wheel will EVER come off the ground... :mad:

I also am running 18's on the rear... W/ this gearing it is fast once you get going. I run along a dirt road next to a 65mph highway and I easily keep up w/ cars and slowly pass them.

I'm switching back to the 42 stocker so it is "quicker" rather than all out speed. I like to beable to blip the throttle and zip around.

Ok so a 15 tooth cs sprocket would be comparable to running a 38 rear? No grunt at all so first would feel like you were starting off in too high a gear?

im running 15-42 with 18's and it was geared pretty good, but i got new 20's so it seems a little too tall, i think i might end up dropping my cs sprocket one tooth...

I am not sure if how stock your tecate is but I am running 13/38 gears with 22' turf tamers and I still have gobs of power with the wheel still coming off the ground relatively easy (mines alittle modified though). with 18" tires I think you would be closest to stock with the 15 cs which should put you around 65mph, and still leave you with some low end. As to your first post aking if a 38 will give you lowend grunt, the result will be the opposite, taking away low end and giving you more top end.

So with your 22's and stock front sprocket and 38 rear you would have a top speed higher than a stock geared T3. What mods do you have besides a new filter, DG pipe and jetting to be able to still lift the front easily with an extended swingarm?
