Well, I bought a 225DR Yamaha off Roy Franks and Swinehart was AWESOME enough to bring it to TF for me. When he pulled in I was pretty excited to see it and hoping it was as nice as it looked in the pics Roy sent me. I did not know it was missing rear brakes, the swingarm was not bolted in properly, and the keyswitch was messed up, nor did the electric start work, and the battery box was missing. When we got it off the trailer, it DID start, and I put it in gear and sometimes it would move, but I could not get it in reverse, and seeing as the swingarm was not bolted in, I didnt really mess with it, plus it wouldnt start again. I got it home, and got the mouse nest out of the airbox, checked out the spray bomb "restification"-that was un-cool but it did start right up and move when I tried it. It also went into reverse, and moved, no problem. I think it will work out for the wifes bike pretty good, but there seems to be a problem with the swingarm "studs" things, that the locknut goes on. The swinger was loose, and I got some nuts from 350XinNY on the way home, plus some other parts. The left side one wont budge and I broke my tool messing with it for a few minutes. If I screw the right side in all the way, the swinger is nice and tight, but then I cant get the locknut on it, Im kinda confused with that. I need a keyswitch with a key, brake pedal, and whomever is familiar with that swingarm set up, please get ahold of me. Im sure the clutches are bad, and Im pretty content with the price of the machine. but for all those TF attendees that saw it sitting by the scud all weekend, it seems to run and drive pretty good, so thats a start! DX/DR pros, shoot me a PM and help me get Mrs. Holic on the trail!

You might as well buy another 225DR right now, because once you ride it you won't want to get off of it for normal everyday putting around. Mine was the funnest trike I have ever owned.

I had to replace all the bearings in the rear diff, swing arm, its been long ago but I do remeber it was a pain in the well

I just got an '86 DRS for my wife last week. I removed the key/ignition and soldered the red and brown ignition wire together to complete the circuit. I then put a tether switch on the bars and wired that to the black and black/white remaining ignition wires.

If you don't need an ignition, it's no problem to remove it from the system.

oh well, makes a NASTY clunking in 2nd gear, looks like its coming apart. A word of caution dealing with sight unseen buying!- SO FAR THE SELLER IS TRYING TO MAKE IT RIGHT SO IM HAPPY.I dont have a problem with selling a POS, just state that it is a POS not "needs a clutch, runs and drives fine, its in very nice condition, as you can see............" I got about an ounce of metal out of the oil filter housing! sure it runs and drives, but can you stand the jerking and clunking? that is the question. I guess I need some gears or something. Whith the clutch cover side off, and you spin the primary clutch so as not to spin the motor, the secondary clutch spins freely and gets caught up on one certain spot when in nuetral-it should rotate freely, right? Theres the problem-internal tranny. I could have lived with the spray bomb, the missing pieces, and the overall appalachin engineering, but there was no mention of a wasted transmission. Oh well, its only money right?? Oh, BTW it is a red frame on it (supposed to be) isnt that an 86 225DRS?? It did have black plastic so I was told, and the headlight shell was red, painted black now. Anyone have a good tranny for a 225DX/DR??

I have one in my garage, I was told the motor was good and the rear end was blown out, so chances are that it is good. I f not, I have a guy bringing me another 225 parts machine this weekend.I also have some of the other parts that you need or will shortly. :beer

I'd buy a parts bike if I were you. They are becoming more plentiful as they mature and..... die from lack of care. :( But nice choice for your wife. Mine loves the 225dx. Auto clutch, shaft, and great gas mileage!

hey holic, i'll be straight up with ya, i have a POS bottom end for a 225dx, the cases are beat but it has never been split, and the last time it ran it went through all the gears fine, theres no electrical, or clutch, or any of that, just the center case stuff still sitting in the cases, if you want this, you can have it for the cost of shipping, or if you want me to tear it all down and send you just the gears i'll do that for another $5 ;)
