The 185 was slightly larger with larger tires and about 30 pounds heavier. I am sure there may be some other small differences, but therse are the big ones.
Also 185 built in 1980, 185s built 1981-1983

Also the later of the 185's had suspension in the front too.

hmmmm....I was looking at bikebandit.com and saw an option for 185 and 185s in 1983....were both available?

Or did the 185 disappear when the 185s came about?

I don't think there is any difference. Both had 22x11x8 tires which were the standard size.

I think someone was thinking of the 185s and the 200M or the 185s and the ATC 200.

In 1982 the 185s was unchanged from its original version. By 1983 the model was given a front suspension package and some new tires.

In 1984 the ATC 200s was born. It was just like the 1983 185s but it had 192cc and had a new rear fender/toolbox section in the rear.

In 1985 the bike was unchanged. Honda did change the shift pattern however.

In 1986 the bike was unchanged exept for new graphics.

1980 ATC185 has 25x12x9 an a slightly longer wheelbase, seat height is about the same. The 1981-1983 ATC185S had the 22x11x8 tires with the smaller frame. I have owned both and you can see the difference in size. No not confused with the 200. Look on the 1980 spec page here on 3WW.
