Found a 46mm closed end wrench for removal of the outer axle locknut:

The 46 looks just like the 36mm. The tool is apparently designed for VWs but the extra mm doesn't hurt if you tried (like me) to get the nut off with a BA crescent wrench. They charge $5 for handling plus actual shipping charges, should be able to get one anywhere for under $20.
Also, I used a 3" nipple and the right hub to hold the wrench in place while I applied liberal persuasive force to the wrench. Enjoy!
