Well, went out today with the folks and they towed son back. They said they were 'screaming' about 55+ according to dads speedo on his quad and son's died. No sounds, nothing. He went to try to kick start it...NO COMPRESSION at all  So, I assume the top end went out

you are probably going to have major problems sounds like you might have shattered the piston and if you did the pieces probably fell into the crank and the crank bearings!!!

Everyone said there was no sound heard. Would that make sound?

Ive figured out years ago that is doesnt pay to try and guess what exactly is wrong and how bad it is until you take the top end off and look at it. Last time mine seized, it turned out to be the crank. Top end was fine.

Arggg. Anyone in S. Calif do this? How much should I pay if its the top end and/or the crank  Poor kid, was happy when we finally got it going. Although, he had a smile on his face when he was in front of 'grandpa' :)

Bad crank would give no compression?

Bad crank wont give no compression. My point was, I assumed the top end seized, and had I spent a lot of time pricing all the different scenerios for top end parts needed, it would have been a waste of my time.

You probbaly dont have a crank problem. You probably do have a top end problem. It might only need rings and a piston, it might need a bore job, you might have chunks of debris in the crank, and you might not, or it might need any number of things, and none can really say without taking the top end off and looking at it.

An air cooled two stroke is probably the worlds easiest top end to work on. Take off the exhaust, and the intake, and the head and cylinder unbolts and pops off. What you see wehn you do that dtermines your next best move.

Never done one before. Thought if it was cheap, I'd just pay. I know parts are about $100 I am hearing.

Thanks for the post(s) Tim. Maybe son and I can open it and if it looks hard, well have someone do it, if not well do it. Is there a thread on "how-to" on my top-end?

every time i have had a top end instantly go out it has made a loud noise. and seized momentarily. you might have lucked out and just blew your head gasket.

A. Why does it do this?
Son said he forgot the reserve on the fuel, didn't have it 'on' Was this why?
B. Anyone in S. California do this on the side :)

Took plug out and took off the head bolts. Plug was WHITE  I bet from it running out of fuel. Both kids have same jet 45/150 Although, just increased 45 back to stock idle jet to 50. Left main jet @ 150, stock is 148. Don't think thats it as daughter plug is fine. Banking on more the running out of gas (reserve was on, tank was full of gas) Well see what the top end holds for us
