View Full Version : Help with 85 Tri Z

My tri z wont run and keeps backfiring right before it stalls. It will start for about .5 seconds and most of the time backfire right before it quits. I was riding it around earlier breaking in the rebuilt top end. Iwent to try and ride again and it starts to be a pain. The problem seems like it may be timing related, but the timing isnt adjustable from what i can tell. I took off the stator cover and im stuck trying to pull the fly wheel. Does anyone have any tricks or know of any special tools to use pull one. i have tried two different types so far. Someone help, im jonesin' for some roostin

sounds like you have a gasket leak, check your head gasket and your base gasket while its ideling, listen for squealing...and put your hand around the jug and head and feel for air

dont know if this helps.my 250r did the same thing to me from what you said .on mine theres a lil half moon key that keeps the flywheel from spinning freely that broke and it would start and run for a few then backfire and quit .dont know if the tri-z has similar set up but if the keys broke then your plug wont fire and u flood out the engine.like i said dont know if they are the same just thought it might help u

I was gonna say the same thing. The half moon (woodruff key) wil, shear off and give you these exact sympytoms. I dont know about other people but Ive been through a few of them on my Z, and carry a spare in my toolbox now.

By the way, it uses the most common flywheel puller out there which you can buy at any shop for about $15, and it works on a lot of other bikes and quads. The outer recess around the bolt has threads in it, which are revers, by the way. You screw the puller in, and then the puller has a bolt you tigthen in the middle which pushes the flywheel off the shaft. Yousr should come off pretty easy if its what I suspect, because your flywheel is probably spinning on the shaft.

thanks all, this morning i found my problem, water in the gas and a very shitty plug, to my suprise the flywheel key is still together, all i did this morning is drain the gas, put fresh gas in, new plug, and look at the flywheel. Not sure if i fixed the ultimate problem, but it runs and i can ride. Now only it would get cold and the puddles would freeze up here in New Hampshire :-D
