Hello, maybe there is a FAQ somewhere that answers this? (If so, where?) :) What do the designations mean on Honda's? i.e. E, ES, M, R, S, SX, X I have seen 200s, 200x, 200es and 125M to name a few? I am looking to buy an old three wheeler to fix up and I am confused as to what these mean. Does es mean Big Red? Thanks for any help!

jasenr,Not the resident expert by no means.But here is what I know.The #'s are the engine displacement, rounded off.(my 250 is actually 246cc)The letters are for the different models,i.e. mine is an sx(cross between utility & sport,excellent all around trike). X's are strictly for sport/racing,as were the R's.Yes, es's are big reds,I believe they were made in the 200 & 250 cc models (utility trikes-frt. & rear racks, hi/lo range,elec. start,reverse)Don't know too many specifics about the other models.Maybe someone else can shed a little more light?Hope this helped!!

X shows 4 stroke perfomance, R represents 2 stroke performance (sport machines). Example: 200X, 350X, 250R

E is for E-Start
ES is for Estart (200ES, 250ES)
S I suppose would be utility without eostart (200S)
SX is sport utility (250SX)

Thanks to everyone for the tips! I was wondering what you guys thought about the 185s or the 200s? I am looking for something cheap to get started with. When I was younger, my parents had bought a 200es Big Red and I got a 250sx. Actually, I had a 70 for a week, then I got a 110. About a year later I got the 250sx. Man, I loved that trike! I sure do miss it! :( Anyway, I have seen a couple of 185s' that seem to be OK deals. I am just not sure if they are big enough for a guy my size. I have never seen one. Thanks for the welcome!

All trikes are fairly small compared to 4 wheelers (with the exception on the 250R, 350X, 86/87 T3's), keep that in mind.

Also keep in mind that the 185s has No suspension (some later year(s) has it in the front). The 200S has no rear suspension and barely any front.

If you can afford it buy one with a full suspension (front and rear). I'm not sure how old you are but once you get to my age you have to have a good suspension or youll be sore the next day. The air cooled 250r's are a good bike at a good price.

I found a 185s that I couldn't pass on, it's a 1983 model. I don't really intend to ride this one hard. After I restore it, I am going hunting for an air cooled 250R or 250SX for myself. The 185s is for my wife. :) And me for now! ;) Thanks guys!

"R" is for hp 2-strokes you say, but what about the 450R? I know it's a quad, but Honda was inconsistent?

E = Electric Start
M = Scratching my head??????
X = 4 Stroke Sport/Performance/Racing
R = 2 Stroke Sport/Performance/Racing
S = In some cases this stood for "Shaft Drive" (200 ES, 250 ES). In other cases, it meant "Sport" (200S, 250SX)

Don't forget the three most important letters.
A - All
T - Terrain
