Wow, I still can't get my 82' 185s to run consistently. I think it was last summer that I had to put a new exhaust on it so I got a cobra quiet series exhaust and was able to drive it for a while until one day it had no spark. School started so I completely ran out of time to work on it so I've let it set until just recently. Well anyway, I checked all the wires and coils and the spark plug and plug boot and everything I could think of and everything was fine. I checked the timing and here is where I think I've found the problem. I was looking at the rotor underneath the cdi case trying to get the timing right when I noticed a problem. There is a little black box with a little metal clip sticking out of it that sits directly above the revolving rotor. I can't remember what it is called. But it has wires that go to the ignition stator. Do you guys know what I am talking about? Anyway, that metal clip was in rough shape. It had a notch taken out of the middle of it somehow, and the clip was space about an eigth of an inch away from the rotor. That can't be right, can it? I would show a picture of it but my computer is fried and I can't get a digital picture on these school computers.

The black box it the ignition advance unit, it is what tells you tike when to fire. The air space should be .012-.016 in. (.3-.4 mm) between the metal piece on the bottom of the box and the advance rotor.

The gap on mine happens to be quite a bit more than that. It looks as if the metal piece has been broken off. Do you know where I could find a new ignition advanve unit?

You can still get a new one from a honda dealer or bikebandit. The one on bikebandit is $41.53 (they call it a pulse genorator, it is #4)---> bikebandit part (http://houseofmotorcycles.bikebandit.com/partsbandit/oem_schematic_view.asp?schem_dept_id=179764&section_dept_id=1&section_dept_name=OEM+%28Stock+Parts%29&dept_type_id=2&model_dept_year=1982&model_dept_mfr=Honda&model_dept_id=179170&model_dept_name=ATC185S) . If you want to spend less then you can buy a used one. One from a 200 should also work.
