View Full Version : how have you fixed your gashed tires?
Today I was working on getting my trike all together so when I get my engine back in a few days ill be able to just drop it in and ride. Well as I was filling my tires I noticed a little peice of string coming out of one of them ... curiousity having got the best of me I grabbed a pair of pliers and jerked on out and ssshhhhh...there goes all the air in my tire. The slice is a little less then a half inch long but is a mm or so spread thanks to someone jamming a cotton peice of string and some tar in it....the tires look brand new and i dont want to throw them away... what are my options?..can I get tubes for them?... patch it from the inside maybe???

That "piece of string with tar on it" was probably a tire plug. The easy fix in to put a new plug in it.

a tube is the best option (In my opinon anyways) but you can also put a patch on the inside of the tire, but you will have to clean the inside tire area where the hole is VERY thoroughly or the patch will not stick. I've used Mineral spirits, and rubbing alcohol with decent results before. A tube is the best soloution in my opinon though.

I'd go the auto store or walmart and buy some new trireplugs(tar covered string).I've used 5 or 6 of them in the same gash and it held for yrs. Green slime and fix a flat work, but they make a nasty mess inside the tire and rim when it comes time to replace the tire.A patch will work if you can get the tire off the rim.Tubes are OK but, when the tube breaks you cant plug it or patch it. I seen Howdy patch a nasty hole on the outside(sidewall) of a tire @tf03 and it held air,,not bad for 3AM lol
