View Full Version : Fish Oil In Frame?

I just want a few opinions on this. Drill a few tiny holes in my 250es frame and then spray fish oil into it and then seal it back up. The only reason i want to do this is because the last 2 trikes i bought had rusted out frames. Would it prevent rust so the frame would last longer?

Thanks,

Matt

By driling hole in it you might weaken it or even allow water to get inside...

Hi Matt,

I know just what you mean, as I saw a bike that had rusted through it's lower frame tubes from the inside a few months back and it's frightening. If you look closely at the frame on your bike, you will see that there are small holes at set points around the frame tubing. These were put there by the factory to help line the tubes up for bending during manufacture. Anyway, I'm not sure how thick you need the holes to be, but you may be able to use these to run the pipes through for putting the fish oil or whatever you decide to use in.

Alternatively, undo a few bolts on the lower part of the frame and you "may" find that you can access the inner part of the frame through those. I know it's like that on my 250R and my girlfriend's 200X. If I undo the bolts that hold the rear of the front skid plate to the frame, it gives me access to the inner parts of the lower frame tubes. To be honest, I've been thinking about putting waxoyl inside the tubes ever since I saw that rusted frame, so l'd be interested to find out how you get on.

Hope the above helps.

Cheers,
Jez

Would it be more efficient to actually use the anti-rust stuff they use on cars. (well we use that here in Canada)

Matt,

You shouldn't have to drill anymore holes in your frame. You already have the bolt holes. Just squirt the fish oil into those different holes.

ot just get a big vat full of fish oil and throw the frame in it

Why not order some por15 to spray in it and never have to worry about rust again?

The reason frames rust is that dirt and crap enter the tubes and sit. Your frames have gone at the bottom, right? When this mess gets wet, it stays wet for long periods as there's no way for air circulation to dry it out. So, with prolonged exposure to moisture, the frame will rot quickly. The best solution would be to drill a few decent sized holes (at non critical points)so that you can flush out the tubes on a regular basis. These holes would also aid in the drying process after the flush.

Another idea is to dill small holes, and once your done, plug them with small rubber caps you can get at an auto store.

ugh pluging the holes at the bottom of the frame would just let the was collect from other holes and just sit their in the bottom of the frame and rot right?

No, you plug them once your done draining it to get the junk out. If you need to drain again, just pop them out again.

but if you just leave it open it was get some water in it maybe but would come right back out?
