The '81 and '82 250r is pretty much the same bike. I think the only major differenece between them is the 81 has rear drum brakes and front disc while the 82 has disc all around. I'm currently restoring a 1981 R. You can go to the picture section on the 3WW main site to look at several different member's bikes. There are also a lot of parts that are interchangable from the air cooled models (years 1981-84)

I like 'em. dont listen to the frankenstiens on here. Keep the fat front tire, they are cool. check the 83-84 models, they handle a bit more responsively. I wont use the word "better" because its all a matter of opinion. The prices of the free airs seem to have jumped in the last few months, but there are deals out there still.

A good lil trike. I got mine on a trade. Haven't had to do a thing to it, but do have a complete N.O.S. DG exhaust waiting to go on. Might trim the head a bit too, we'll see.

My '82R was the my most beloved ATV ever and I'm with 'holic ... don't trick it out - the early R's should be "restored" not modded.

They aren't bad bikes. I had an 82 briefly (but it was wrecked by a girl I was dating and consequently unloaded). They are kind of cool bikes. Keep it stock, though. Putting too much money into these bikes to perform well you will soon realize is a greivous error. If you want performance, go for the 85+ liquid (or the tri-z or tecate-3). For just a simple sport bike, its not bad though. If you got a good deal lined up on one, pick it up.

As you can see, my kids have a DG pipe/silencer added. Nice little mod without changing the style.

keep it leave the front end the way it is and run the he!! out of it!!!!

mine is ugly but i have about 1000 into it. the only thing that isn't original is the h bars, rear rims/tires,dg exhaust, rings, stator coil, all bearings, brakes.
