250es diff

I just noticed that my 250es differetial and axel housing are completely diffrent to the 1985 bigreds. Is this the same deal with the 250es? Is the 87 the only year it was changed dramatically? What would be better, the solid one (85) or the one that is bolted together (87)?

The 87 is probibly the same as the 86. Big improvement over the 85. You can remove it in one piece. Bearing seals are better also.
