hello all you trike gurus, here an easy one to answer: I have a 250R with a fairly fresh piston in it, I need to know what everybody runs their oil mixture at, keeping in mind that 2 strokes generally run richer as they age. I have seen both sides of the piston and no grooves, so its good. I ran 28:1 the first time I rode it, the oil wasn't dripping out of the tail pipe but it was too rich, it did however blow perfect smoke rings. The temp conditions are 75-80 degrees F, Southern CA dry, The bike is totally stock and I like it more than my 2003 YZ450F. JUST KIDDING!

What up Chris McDaniel?
Welcome to the board. I would run Yamalube 28:1 as your doing. Run it as rich as you can without fouling plugs. Adds life to the engine. How long you had that 250R? Do you like it. Those things are so fast.

I love it, my buddy sold it to me, it used to be a piece of......... some new plastic, love and alot of coolant and gear oil changes since I've owned it and its never left me stranded so far. The thing is fast no doubt, faster than anyone should go on one. I use it to light off fireworks in the dez off my six-pack-rack, any idea where I can get a mug-buoy for the handle bars to carry my beer while I shift?

I'm getting a drink buoy for my 200X. YOu get them at boat/marine hardware stores. You can't ride fast with a drink buoy but there good for cruzing around at night when you want to relax and bring a beer.

That's OK...I run Honda HP4 in my YZ426. I run HP2 in my R's at one bottle to 5 gallons of VP. I assume 32:1 is the mix.

Buy u some castor 927 and run it 40:1. Best oil I ever used. Whats your compression on the piston? If its over 10.5:1 then get u some high octane fuel. That R will run then.

I add one 8oz. bottle of Neo (blue) oil to 5gal. of Av gas. Your going to need to play with the jetting(increase) and watch your plugs closely for the first few short rides and then, less as you go. Just start with a larger main jet than you need, to begin with. Better to start too rich than too lean. Have an assortment of jets on hand and decrease the jet until you get a slightly dark(not wet) plug. When you think you have the right jet keep a carefull eye on your plug initially. Also keep a supply of new plugs that you can make a more accurate appraisal of your jetting. Once your finished you should not get much smoke at all, but the sweet smell of Av gas and Neo oil, better throttle response and less plug fouling. Have fun, take it slow, and watch your plug. I used to live in Yuma AZ and this oil is what all my friends were running on their 2 stroke Hondas. It is hard to find, so you might want to stock up on it once you find it. It is a pain to get the jetting just right initially, but once you do, it will be worth it. It was for me and and everyone I rode with at Glamis and Buttercup.

Thanks guys thats a little more than I needed. I really only use this thing for night time activities. Its completely stock, I have no intention of making it faster and I want it to be reliable and last me. If I want to go fast I just hop on my YZ450F. So one more time does everybody agree with 28:1? It has never fouled a plug with that mixture, I haven't had to touch the carb and I love the convenience factor of pump gas.

Stick with the 28:1. It won't hurt anything. Sounds like your a little conservative with your "R". Thats good. It will last longer.

If youre going to run Yamalube, Id bump it up to 32:1. Over oiling accelerates buildup and deposits, shortens the lifespan of silencer packing, causes excessive smoke, performance reduction, and offers no improvements in lubrication or engine life. 28:1 isnt that bad, but Id bump it up a little.

Yamalube, cause its the best!

Yamalube is not my favourite oil...the best oil is Amsoil...or motul

Back in my racing days I used to run Bel-Ray MC1+ at 50:1 and Cam2 Supreme (104 octane)fuel with proper jetting, never fouled a plug or blew much smoke. This was on a 250R with a Paul Turner National engine.

A lot of people get oil/fuel mixture confused with air/fuel mixtures. With any decent oil, I'd prolly run 32:1 and work on your jetting (idle, slide, & main) for the best performance and engine life.

Back in my racing days I used to run Bel-Ray MC1+ at 50:1 ....

Used to! man, that's about all i've run for the last 15 or 16 years! I love MC-1 and i'll run H1R in a pinch. But believe it or not, only since about '00 or '01 have i been mixing it 50:1. for eons I was always 32:1.

I tried blue marble for a while. I like it because of no smoke and it seems to clean 2 strokes out good like they claim. I need to get a gallon from TimSr in the near future.

...the best oil is valvoline multi-purpous 2-stroke oil :D

Anyone out there run Goldenspectro 50:1 ? Thats what i run and i haven't had any problems with it. I also ran Amsoil 100:1 for a while and that seemed to make my R run like a champ, but i switched because of engine reliability.

I've run BelRey MC1+ at 50-1 in my '84 for 20 years.
Lately I've been mixing it at about 45-1 with avgas with good luck also in my R and sons blaster.

The blue oil in the blue avgas looks really cool also.

BTW, is there a shelf life for oil? I still have several cans of MC1 that is like 12 years old. Would it still be OK to use??

Listen. Run 50:1 with amsoil. It will be more responsive, much less smoke and kick butt WITHOUT ENGINE WEAR above the stated 20:1!!!!
FACT!!!!!! It is a bearing motor and was designed before synthetics really came to town. Mineral based oils are slowly heading south-no offense.
