A guy I buy trikes off of, to fix up and resell them has a all original 1986 250r, the only thing that appears to be wrong with it is the side case is broke, it is on the kick start side, I didn't even look hard enough to see if the chain is on that side, is it?

I normaly do deal with 2 strokes unless they are sleds, but this trike had been stored for the last 5 years, and looks mint, original seat fenders tank shrods front tire, back tires are new, it has all the decals on it.
He has another 250r there with full FMF exhaust, i told him if i get the full exhaust i might take it off his hands, he wants 700 bucks for the trike and said it will cost 45 bucks to weld the side case? does this sounds worth it, I want to kick it over first just to see how the compression is, but other then that the trike looks great. sry for the long post

if its an 86 250r the chain is on the left side, opposite of the kicker, if its the kicker side that is bad, perhaps its only the clutch cover? usually a bolt loosens up and pushes through the clutch cover and the right case is still good.. if its the right side, def. snag it up.. you are almost certain you can find a cheap right case, i just sold a good one for $25.. everyone needs the left cause the chain pops off and destroys it.. but you can usually take it too a shop and fix either cse for $75 if the damage isnt too bad..of if you need a new case, they run around $200-250 and plus you have to split the cases, and get into that beast..

That is a perplexing problem. If the clutch cover case is broken...what went wrong? There are notorious problems with the 250R. There is a reason that the clutch cover case goes for $25 and the sprocket case goes for $200 (even used)...chain coming off and breaking the case...counterbalancer holder breaking...gear in the transmission breaking...etc. How bad is the case? If it has a good size crack in it, then I would be concerned. Does it turn over? I would ask myself...what caused the problem. That is not a "classic 250R" problem. Quesitons I would think of is....did the clutch basket break? Was the case damaged by a rock, etc. If the basket broke, you are in for more that $25. Just my 2 cents.
