I need a hand on my 85 R, I think I posted something about it like this a while ago, For what ever reason, my headlight does not work, I'm thinking my wiring is messed up somewhere. I pulled the tank today to see if I can track it down, well all the connections look good, the ground looks good. oh here's another thing, the kill switch only works when the headlight switch is on, then when it dies the headlight comes on as it dies, Does that mean bad ground? I took some emrey cloth to the frame where it is grounded. I've tried another on off switch and now I'm out of ideas, will a 86 harness work on a 85? I know the cdi is different but I do have a complete 86 harness with cdi to try, help me out if you guys have any ideas, thanks

If you have any bare wires from chaffing, that could be a cause for a short. Any corrosion on any of the connections or terminals? Any way moisture or water is getting into the wiring harness/light switch/kill switch/cdi unit? If all else fails, try disconnecting the kill switch and the headlight seperately and trying them. You could also meter the wires to each and check for continuity.....Good luck. Wirings not that hard - it all starts somewhere and ends somewhere. Isolate each item and then go in between them!

i had this same problem before when i still had a headlight on my 85, the switches were all screwed up, i checked everything over, cleaned every connection, sanded grounds down, did everything i could think of, i finally said screw it and got a Gunnar tether kill switch, and just have the headlight on constantly (except i do have a little on/off switch), although i dont have a headlight on it anymore because i do not like the looks of a headlight on a R...., theres not really much advice i can give you, i never found the problem, i think someone may have switched wires around in the harness or something so things were cross and backwards., but not sure., if you got a wiring diagram just go over all the wires and make sure everything in the right spots
