Well I did it! I tore my Trike all to pieces today, for the start of my new 200X restoration project. The Trike is in dying need of it...The guy I bought it from a few months back did a...well what I would call a "Sh*t Box Restore". He painted the Motor, Rims, and Exaust Silver, Then he painted the Chassis, Bars, Swing Arm and even the Rear Shock Blue. He didn't even take the time to mask the Trike off or even sand it. The only reason I bought it is because it runs like hell! It hasn't once ever let me down and starts on the first kick EVERY time! Anyways back to the restore. I took out the Motor and gave it to a buddy who is going to rebuild it and paint it Black. I took the Rear Shock, Swing Arm, Motor Mounts, and other misc. items and SandBlasted them today...I think the Trike is going to turn out very nice...and I just started...I found the paint color today for the Chassis and it is going to be "Ford Electric Red" the same looking color the YFZ450 has...The plastics and tank will remain White along with a Black seat and Black Rims...How ya'll think its gonna look? I also need to know the best way to paint it for it to last...How many coats? Clear Coats? Any "Restoring" information you have please share it with me..Thanks

Sounds good. As for paint how about you get the frame powdercoated? I would but there is nobody around here to do it. The colour scheme will look good, IMO.

I will be posting pic's as often as possiable. I would PowderCoat the Frame but that cost alot of money and this isn't my main ride...Just my Wife/Friends ride when we go riding so I don't want to put ALOT of money in it but I am going to good work on it and atleast make it pretty and handle better than before. I just can't wait for the painting...I think this color scheme is going to be awesome looking!...

Well I did alittle more work to the Trike over the last week here is the update...Also pictures will come as soon as my Wife developes them and scans them...Heres the list:
1. Sand Blasted EVERYTHING! (Chassis, Triple Trees, Swing Arm, ETC)
2. Fabricated a new "Cool" head light, Took a piece of Diamond Plate Aluminum and cut it square to the size of the forks (width) and then bought two round fog lights for a car and cut a hole in the aluminum to the diameter of the lights and mounted them in there...looks SLICK!...Hope it works...lol...
3. I rewired my wiring harness with all new wiring and then since I don't have the factory light/kill switch I took a 5" by 5" piece of the diamond plate and put 3 switchs in it and wired up the Lights, Kill Switch, and Then a extra switch is just there..I mounted it to the Bar clamp...This also looks cool because I put little lights above each switch so when its on the light comes on...
4. Got Primer, Paint, And Masking Tape...
Frame: Ford Electric Red
Forks: Ford Electric Red
Bars: Ford Electric Red
Triple Trees: Black
Bar Clamp: Black
Swing Arm: Ford Electric Red
Sprocket: Silver
Axle: Black
Hubs: Ford Electric Red
Rims: Polished...Maybe Black?
Plastics: White
Seat: Black
Grips: Black
Engine: Black with Ford Electric Red Detail on some small parts

Well anyways sorry for the long post...I am just so excited...This is my first restore...and I think it is coming along great and is going to look awesome!...

That thing is awesome. I really like it. I also have a 83 200X that I just had the engine completely rebuilt. Now I am working on cosmetics. Can I ask you a question or two:

Where did you get the new "200X" decaled seat cover?

Did you paint the tank youself and buy new air scoops. If so where sis you get them?

Where did you get the white plastic?
Thanks allot for the answer, Chris

When you did the engine rebuild what did you find most worn out?

On my 83 200X I replaced the kickstart gears, 1st & 2ed gear, top end, cam, oil pump and exhaust valve. Its back toegether and running good but I'm getting a little oil seeping out of my front valve cap. I need a couple $2 o-rings.

i replaced the piston with 10 25 1 new rings valve job. cam and the most worn was the kickstarter gears. and clutch.

jared im keeping the calfab i just wana hav a 350x shock on there and loosen it up alot.

Was the kickstarter slipping? Did you replace the kickstart ratchet spring with a heavier duty newer year spring? I've heard some people have put 2 springs in there to get more pressure so it doesn't jump a tooth under frantic kicking.

Whats the best clutch to replace with? I have a Barnet which looked good when I inspected it during the rebuild but I have no idea what the signs are of a worn out clutch when riding it. I never had one go out. Have you?

I am glad to hear so many people are "fixing up" there Trikes! I got a question...Since I got the frame sand blasted should I just go ahead and Gusset it while it is waiting for paint? Not do anything major just some Gussets in some stress points? Also how many coats of paint and clear coats you guys usally do? Thanks!

Im getting ready to paint mine I was going to get it powdercoated but I ran into some problems that limited my budget. So I dont have the money for the pwdercoat now. :(

Anyways Im going to
Primer, sand the primer.
3-4 coats of paint.
3-4 coats of clear coat.

Hopefully it will hold up alright.

Don't give up on the 200X. I just got mine rebuilt and I was able to get all the parts at bikebandit.com. I also have a 83 200X. I got all the kickstart gears, springs as well as a cam, 1st 2ed gear, rings, gaskets, exhaust valve and oil pump. When you go the website it says discontinued on a couple of the OEM part numbers but they can still get them from the manufacter. Discontuniued means they just don't stock it. Your fortunate becasue parts are easiest to get on a 83-85 200X. Also ebay has allot of parts but I would buy the gears new. Mines all done and I love it. Runs so smooth. Hang in there. You'll love it.

O damn, I didn't know you can still get that stuff new  I thought used was the only way to go for things like gears that came up as discontinued.

partsfish.com is also really good. i usually never buy any used engien or drivetrain parts used.

so if i buy some of those "discontinued" parts from bike bandit how long does it take to receive your order?
