Not sure about the ES but for the SX....
87 motor had a cam chain tensioner change and the changes Jeswinehart mentioned.
Carb is the Keihin 08 or best SX or ES carb to date.
87 got different swingarms and enclosed rear brakes, better sealing orings on the axle tubes.

Im asking out of general intrest. Dirtcrasher, when you say diffrent swingarm do you mean completely diffrent design?
Thanks,
Matt

swingarm on the 86 250es can be removed. Carb had the cold start system added on the 86. rear axel bearings were sealed better. There were three different starter motors. At least two different sets of starter gears. Slightly different wireing harness. Different cam chain tensioner on the 87. i know for sure there was something else but just can`t think of it right now. :?

On the sx, the swinger is a lot different. The 85 hat the axle tube welded on,and the 86 has it bolted on

Between 85 and 86 there are a ton of differences. Control switches are diff. Swingarm is a completely new design for 86. Rear hubs are diff. Rear brakes got an update too - much better seal design.
