I went over to the junk yard Chris (MustangChris) was talking about and bought the 200x today. I gave 280 for it, a YT-175 parts bike, and a starter for my ATC-200e. The 200x is in really good shape. I feel like I stole from the guy. From what he told me, it's an 85 with an 87 tank. He thought it was an 87 because of the 250r-like radiator shrouds on the gas tank but then he said it has a 5 speed. So that's my closest guess. The sticker that normally tells all of that isn't on there. The rear plastic and front fenders are black, and appear to be brand new, and I think it has a blue 87 tank with red shrouds. The fenders and tank don't match up, so that's why I think they're from different years. It is missing brake calipers and cables all the way around, it needs a new shifter, and is missing the rear skid plate and that is it as far as I can tell. I think I might try to trade off the plastic or the tank to get the right year for it, though I do like the look of the radiator shrouds. It has new tires all around, and everything seems to be in pretty good shape. It just needs a tune up, some paint, and I think the gasket/seal that goes between the two parts of the carb is missing. It runs great though. I can't wait to make it all purdy. Pretty good deal eh? -Aaron

EDIT: and if you guys know any subtle differences besides the tank shrouds and tranny that I can tell the year let me know. Plastic is aftermarket, so that won't be any help.

... Sounds like a great little project trike you bought there ... one concern though ... how well does the seat match up with the tank - I know they were very different from '83/85 - 86/87.

Look at how you adjust the chain, the 83-85's adjust where the swing arm bolts to the frame. I think the '86's are like a 350x in the fact that you have to rotate the bearing carrier to tighten or loosen the chain. what color seat and what does it say on it? What side of the motor is the spark plug on?

The easiest way to tell an 83-85 200x from an 86-87 200x is by the frame. An 83-85 frame is made of round tubing, an 86-87 frame is made of square tubing. 83-85's have 5 gears. 85-87's have 6 gears. An 86 has red tank shrouds. An 87 should have a key switch on it and white tank shrouds. There are also some differences in the stickers on the fenders of the 86-87's. 83's came with a swing arm made of round tubing. 85's came with silver forks, blue fork boots, and red, white, and blue tank stickers. 84's came with black forks, black fork boots, and I think red and orange tank stickers. There are differences in the original seats that came on the 83-85's, but I'm not real sure about what they were. But the only sure way to find out what you have is by the frame number and engine number. Things got switched around alot, this is very apparent when looking at my X. I think I have all this right.
