so as a 61 year old with a bad knee probably from badly tuned 200x trikes. I go to the doctor and have me knees looked at. Conversation turned to why my right knees jacked up. I tell him years of working on these crazy three wheelers. (well this is where MRC will understand about asking about trikes!) I ask the doc if he knows what a ATC is and he's like sure, my dad has one sitting in his yard!
Of course I can't shut up about trikes and ask if he wants to get rid of it.
Well three weeks goes by, the doctor texts me pics of a 82 250r. I talked to his dad, it's got a 300cc kit in it, tires are bad, hasn't been ridden in 3 years but the pics show its complete. he also said the master cylinders are probably bad. He's going to be coming to town Sunday, said he'll throw it in the truck. Hopefully I'll be posting pics of my new trike Sunday afternoon. The owner is the original.pwner of the trike,.pretty cool. jim

That's fantastic, Jim. I picked up a stock 81 250R right after last Thanksgiving. I insisted on the date so I can say that I went Black Friday shopping and came home with a 250R.

I was looking on Partzilla lately and think I seen the 300 kit listed in there with the stock parts.

Not that anything's available anymore, but if that's what it has and you need part numbers, you may still be able to find them there. It may help if you have to open it up and need numbers to find NOS parts.

if all the stars align, I'll be picking it up after work tomorrow, I'll get as much info onbwhats been done to the trike over the years. I've got a pic of the side and the fins don't look like regular 250r cylinder fins but the pics not that clear. jim

If I remember right , the 300 kits had an extra head bolt, at least the mugen kits anyway.

well I drove a hour north to pick it up
motor spins, tires need replace, came with aluminum wheels with junk paddles and a set of original gold wheels. I noticed the front caliper and bracket is hanging by a zip tie. both masters are dry. maier plastics at least the rear. seems fairly complete, not missing much. Not sure where 1st gen prices are. I paid 400 for it, no title but the certificate of ownership, since barney was the original owner. jim

Nice find. I have the remains of one of those here in Australia, original Australian delivery. Is that a Dick Cepek Bajo Knobby on the front?

Count the head bolts. 6 is stock , 7 is the 300 kit.
There was a member here a while back that was all about the air cooled 250r. I think he went by manbearpig.

I should do a will it run video. pulled the tank and plug, oiled down the cylinder before I kicked it over because I didn't want to spin it on a dry cylinder. checked for spark and it's was good. put the plug back in, checked the oil.level in the trans, it was good, mixed up some gas and squirted it into the fuel line. it over filled so the carbs probably dry. but it started on the second kick. headlight and tail.light even works.
now to order front and rear master cylinders tonight. I had a pair of wheels and tires that fit the bolt pattern. the front caliper bracket looks to be missing a mounting bolt, so the front tire has to come off so I can bolt the unit back on. I think it's missing a guide rod off the caliper mount, ive got a extra 200x assembly so I'm going to see if anything will swap. jim

well, get it fired off Saturday, send a video of it running to a few friends and previous owner. A trike buddy recently lost his 250r and threw a offer I couldn't refuse on Sunday. So it went to a good home. jim

Just be aware of running lean on old 2 strokes, air leaks from crank seals or intake boots. Don't want to lose that 300 kit, it was worth the 400$ alone...
