say a person runs into a guy with a goki starter bolted to a spare 350x motor. What do I need to get this to work on my 350x if I buy the starter set up off this guy? battery and a starter switch and maybe a solenoid? how to charge the battery? He didn't say anything about having a harness, just that he's got a spare 350x motor in the shed with a goki installed that he has no use for. jim

second question if anyone might have a idea. guy that has the starter has if bolted to a spare motor. what's a decent untested price for one of these? I'd like to pay the least as possible, seller wants the most. just trying to figure a price point. basically a motor, ring gear and side cover. no harness, or switch. jim

Make sure you check out the starter and ring gears , their know to loose teeth easily , Also the bendix on the starter .
Their are two different flywheels , I believe in 1985 and 1985 1/2 , stators change as well .
The charging system connects to I believe a yellow ? wire with a resistor for charging .
I’ve done a bunch of these over the years but it’s been a while , I still have an original instruction manual that I can look up for you but posting pictures here is a challenge lately .

As for price , who knows if it’s a working setup and getting replacement parts is near impossible .
I wouldn’t pay more than a couple hundred bucks .

If you do purchase it get the flywheel , stator and cover .

ps2fixer made some 350X Goki harnesses.

There are new rings gears available for the '85 350X.

talked to the owner of the starter, the pricepoint or trade value he has is my running suspended 185s. So I'm pretty sure the cash price is going to be more than I feel it's worth to me. jim

I would think any harness from a 200e or 200m would work fine. they would have provisions for the charging system and button for starter relay.
I have seen a guy on FB making replacement ring gears and I think whole kits.

Good luck Jim.

Completely different setup.

The 185/200 series (not the 200X) have a floating ground and the electric start versions use the same basic system with the charging and starting circuits added on. The 350X doesn't have a floating ground and all Goki done was add a single diode after the OE AC voltage regulator which makes it a half wave charging system. That type of charging is about as basic as possible and is not ideal for any modern electronics and isn't the best for charging a battery either, it's just simple and inexpensive.

Floating the ground on the 350X would require removing and modifying the stator, or Goki providing one ready to go, which would have increased the cost and installation complexity of their kit. A full wave rectifier/regulator would have been required too, or it would defeat the purpose of floating the ground.

I bought a brand new Goki starter many years ago for my 350X. It was a pain to install and never worked correctly. I pulled it off and sold it a few years ago for nearly twice what I paid for it. My advice, stay away, it's far less hassle and way more reliable to just set it up correctly and learn how to kick the thing.

I sold my Goki setup about a year ago for $1000. It sold right away. So yes they are very valuable. But this was a complete setup in darn near new condition. They work "ok" when installed properly and use the right battery. If they are not installed perfectly they will just destroy themselves. And there are 2 different ring gears, one for the 85 and one for the 86. The ring gear has to be set up right. Kind of like a rear end ring and pinion on a truck. Also you MUST have a working de-comp system on the trike. If you have the side cover and the ring gear you can piece together the rest. The starter from a snow mobile works. I just don't remember which on I used, and the charge wire (yellow wire) can be made up if its missing. It just has an inline diode to switch the power from A/C to D/C to trickle charge the battery using the lighting circuit. I sold mine because it was just to much of a pain in the butt to keep everything working perfectly. Starter shafts and the ring gear are deffinatly the weak links in the system.

the owner sent me a pic today, its bolted to a motor I think he said it's got a 410 kit in the motor. and the harness and battery box is all there. he said he's had it on a few of his 350x trikes. I asked what he wanted for the starter and the motor it's bolted too. He's got to kick it around before coming up with a price. jim

At the right price it would be worth trying to to see if it works for you. They are pretty easy to install and remove so it would be worth a try. You just need to have a side cover gasket on hand and a GOOD battery with cranking amps on the high side. I ran mine for a couple years and after the "cool factor" wore off I found it was more of a pain in the but than it was worth. You will have no problem selling it if it doesn't work out for you.

Hey Bob, I'm 170lbs soaking wet and really struggle to start the 350x after its been ridden and hot. Starts very easily cold. So, I purchased a Goki. Well, a Goki cover, new ring gear and aftermarket starter. I'm building the rest of the system with very little electrical knowledge. What type of battery do you recommend, amps and volts? I plan on buying a 400ex starter relay, inline fuse and a diode. I'll use 4 gauge wire for battery and starter cable, 14 gauge for the wiring harness. I posted a similar question on the "GOKI" Facebook page so, if you're on that site, no need to respond, same user.

Thank you
