I'm currently going through a 87 x I removed the RH side cover pulled the oil screen cleaned etc. The issue that I'm having is putting it back together. I do have a manual I placed the decompression lever clockwise as stated in manual. Made sure the bearing was in place letters out on the clutch hub along with clutch lifter seated properly. It goes on but there's a gap of about a quarter inch. Dowels are in place am I just missing something. I also double checked the Kickstarter and made sure that everything was correct slot to dot on the decompression lever. Am I missing something. Motor is currently out of the machine. Am I missing something?

I'm running out the door but yes it'll hold out about a quarter inch until you turn the decomp lever counter clockwise roughly 30 degrees. (from where the decomp lever is in my pics) DO NOT force it you'll snap off the arm inside-
I just put this together 15mins ago like u see in pics
hope this helps, and NO RTV silicone :D good luck

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkI appreciate the help but for some reason it's not going flush. I stood there and looked at it sliding the cover and could see I missed the lever on the Kickstarter. There is play in the Kickstarter as it will float down. I triple checked to make that piece will slide down and compress the spring as well. If you or someone else could look and see if anything is a miss. Also was stubborn coming off. I personally haven't opened this motor until now. I did have to spilt the spring on it's perch below the clutch hub. It should just drop/slide flush case to case. This is a fresh project so I have no idea about any previous work. Everything looks fine but I feel something is off. Thanks Chad

Sent from my moto z3 using TapatalkI swapped the bearing on the clutch hub letters in wear marks no big difference. But when I put the bearing on the case side it got much closer. Still a shade off especially towards the front. Perhaps the previous owner warped it some?. I am picky though. I only pulled to check wanting to due a fresh top end. As stated earlier everything else in the bottom end looks good.. Am I to OCD. If you havent gotten it yet? Is your gear change shaft sticking out to far on clutch side? i seem to remember from the past if you had the case open and leaned weight on the shaft from other side it could slide through a small amount and knock it out of sinc and need to play w/it abit to line back up to slide the shaft back through, If that makes sense/ half asleep.

How much (measure) it/ straight edge on the gasket surface side/side is the shaft in/out of that? i can look at mine and compare- I'm willing to guarantee this is your issue

I second on what Shep is saying on the shift shaft .
Also look at his picture , your outer spring isn’t set correctly on the shift shaft .

Make sure you reset that spring , yours has popped off it’s catch .
Look at sheps picture and you’ll see what I’m talking about .

I'll post a close up pic of that shaft assembly (wont take mine apart though) you probably need to remove that large spring and the very outer assembly. If i remember correctly theres a collar/groove that slips out that can be only reached by digging in a little bit.
i'll post a pic by like 3 this afternoon.

Well this is what i got- using a straight edge the shaft is even/maybe a hair shorter.
put the engine on blocks so no pressure is on it while fixing, oh and try not to drop anything inside it'll be hard to fish it out.....(lay engine on its side) it'll be easier. As shortline said fix that large spring and you'll need to find whats outa place a pin or collar not in a groove somewhere under the outer parts you see.
