Finally got around to comparing the 5 speeds.

85 tri z
1st gear 2.38
2nd gear 1.75
3rd gear 1.41
4th gear 1.14
5th gear 0.95

86 yz
1st gear 2.14
2nd gear 1.75
3rd gear 1.36
4th gear 1.14
5th gear 0.95

So my z is an 86 but has the 5 speed was hoping 5th gear in the yz was taller to give me more top end but it doesn’t. The z 1st gear is pretty low was debating on swapping it needed some opinions. Might change 3rd too.

Are the YZ and Tri-Z transmission shaft part #’s the same?

They’re different part #s the main shaft 1st gear is made on the shaft, z has 13 teeth the yz has 14 teeth other than that they’re identical. The drive shaft is identical but the splines for the sprocket on the z shaft are a cunt hair longer

My opinion is that the lower first is really nice for a trike/quad. I do like wider gear ratios though. Close ratio trannys are great on an mx track, but that is not what most people do on a daily basis. I plotted the triz and yz gear ratios and the triz looks like it is much better to me. The yz 1st and 2nd are close and a big jump to 3rd.

Looks like the z trans ratio is really evenly spaced out. I’m still debating the 1st gear though I get in tight spots where sometimes 1st is too low and 2nd is too high I’m going to have to think about it for a bit
