I have a 79 xl250 honda and 77 yz250 that I am considering trading for a 84 250r. xl250 has motor apart, needs rop end assembled, but I have the parts to do it. I lost ambition on that bike. The YZ is stripped down to undergo a budget resto, but I had not gotten started yet. both bikes have all the parts. YZ did run when I pulled the motor.


a guy is offering to trade both for a 250r. needs piston and cylinder. missing some odds and ends.too, chain, sprocket, front fender. I would also have to put down 350 in cash.
I'm not super into the 250r market, so im not sure about the trade. I want an R, but I'm not sure if I want to trade both bikes.

A different guy wants to trade the xl250 for a running 81 110, it's very complete, but needs a couple minor cosmetic things. this would be a straight trade, no cash.

What trade would you do? I am asking for some advice e on what might be a better deal.

Man that's a tuff call for me.

I love both of the bikes you currently own. Vintage MX stuff is wildly popular now.

For me if it was more complete and depending on the condition of the plastics I may entertain the idea for a little bit but ultimately that 77 YZ would have me smitten. Plus you would have to lay down another $350 cash money for the deal to be done....I don't know.

You're not even in love with the XL so that's something to think about. But are you in love with the 110?...... Personally I may be more tempted with that deal.

I think it would depend on what type of riding you do, where, and how often. Are you going to get the potential out of the 250R?

I've gotten 3 air cooled 250r projects in the past. the 2 I got running both had bad 2nd gears. so getting a non running trike may get you more surprises after it gets running. jim

I decided I'm gonna trade the xl for the 110. the distance between me and the other option is too much for me to make it work. Also, I really wanna keep my YZ, they are awesome bikes. Vintage MX is one of my passions, and I still have a good street legal trail bike, my 83 xr350.

If you plan to actually ride the 110 and it's not too nice, may as well fit a 185S/200S suspension fork to it. That'll make it much more enjoyable.

Heck yeah they help. The steering stop has to be modified, but other than that it's a pretty simple upgrade.

A full rigid trike is really tough on the arms and wrists if trail riding or generally riding hard. It's the same difference as a full rigid bicycle versus a hardtail with a suspension fork. Lacking rear suspension can somewhat be dealt with, but having a rigid fork hammers the arms and wrists too much to handle for a whole day of hard riding.

i have done the swap to a suspended front end on other rigid frame machines, makes a world of difference!

Dave. Think you made a great move. Now you can cruise around on the 110 while you build the bike.
