running weird.

this is driving me nuts. my beater 185s drips oil out tje pipe, runs great, smokes like a freight train, but runs great! now my other 185s checked valve adjustment, checked timing, new plug, rebuilt carb, new filter in the stock air box idles good, but has a flat spot right off idle, full throttle it runs okay, has a occasional pop out tje exhaust. I tried the oil burner carb, same thing.
the weird runner has stock cdi, new spring in the pulse generator, stock coil.
Old smoky has a 13 dollar china harness with cdi, coil plug wire. I haven't swapped the harness yet (don't want to cut the factory harness) but could it be the stock 40 year old ignition parts? jim

A flat spot and a pop, make me think jetting or running rich, lean it out a bit, clean and recheck the plug.

strange thing is both carbs run like this on bike #1 and the pop happens at idle. Jim

Coil or CDI would be my guess

I'm going to swap the Chinese coil, wire and cdi and see what happens. jim

swapped coil, wire and cdi, starts easier, popping went away. installed the old parts onto old smokey and itsbhard to start. I noticed the actual plug wire is a old car plug wire . going to order another China harness to keep old smokey running. jim

another thing that got me thinking. last weekend messing with old smokey, I checked the oil and it was low, grabbed the first bottle on the shelf 0-20 synthetic that goes into my wifes 2017 tacoma. and added over 1/2 a qt that's when the oil started dripping out the exhaust. I'm sure the motor is tired, but maybe pouring basically water in the crankcase didn't help it any. went and changed the oil, found the drain cap loose and wet, had some old Rotella 15w40 Dino oil so that's what in there now. new ignition parts are on its way. we'll see. jim

went and messed with the trike again, starts up and idles fine. the rotor( spark advance),has both springs but really no tension. I had some distributor springs so I changed 1 out. still has a flat spot off idle but not popping.
the carb is part oem, not even sure about the needle. going to order a ebay carb and give it another shot. Once pass the flat spot it has get up and go. I tried the washer on the needle top middle and bottom and really no difference. jim

ordered another ebay carb. 1st thing I notice is the slide and slide cap is bigger than the carb slide and cap that was on the trike. Installed the new carb and it seems to Rev better while parked. going to pull it out this weekend. If it runs good, going to order a new hi flite seat kit and be done with them.
Still haven't decided weather to keep 1 or 2. I'm still stuck with all the extra parts too! Going to drag the 200s frame out and start bolting parts on it and make another trike. jim
