OK, we got it started and it was running bad, ice in the tank I think. But anyway it stalled and when we went to start it the rope didnt pull itslef back into the recoil. We messed with it, hit the side with a hammer hoping to knock something right. Any ideas what could be wrong????

well to start very simple ,,, try spraying massive amounts of wd-40 in the rope hole. working the rope back and forth while you spray,,,

You have to rewind the spring. Take it off, take it apart, and rewind it. Replace the rope while your at it. ;)

The spring in the recoil may have broke at the end where it hooks the rope holder.

For me the recoils are real easy to fix ( decompression assembly is pain though ). What might have happened is the end of the spring broke or bent. When this happens the rope will not recoil. To fix it you need to remove the pullstarter and take it apart. Be very careful and take your time so you see how it is put together.
If the end of the spring is broken you can bend a new lip on the end. To do so you need to heat up about a 3/4 inch end of the spring ( red hot ) and bend it around with needle nose pliers. If you do not heat it up it will break.
Once you have fixed 1 pullstarter you will be suprized how easy they are to repair. If you not up to fixing it I can help you out there ( Very reasonable ). Email me for details.

They put pullstarters on them because it is a lot cheaper vs putting kickstarters or electric start on them.

You can buy an aftermarket electric start for 200s / 185. I think the company name is koki. They sell for $275.
I'll look for the link.
