I recently had a valve job done on my 350x and I put the head back on yesterday. I’m positive I assembled it all correctly. I went to start it and it had good compression it popped a few times then it srarted after about 5 kicks ran for about 5-10 seconds then died. When I went to kick it again it had barely any compression. I’m sure the cam timing was right and I adjusted the valves at .003”. Just wondering if anyone has seen this happen?

Make sure the compression release mechanism or cable isn’t stuck in the closed position .

The cable isn’t hooked up I was just test firing it after assembly. Why it it were closed would it cause an issue? If it’s down I assumed it wouldn’t contact the exhaust rocker.

Cable needs to be connected, even if not adjusted properly for kick starting, it can rotate into a position that'll keep the exhaust valve open.

I made sure it was staying down and I can push the kick start by hand there is barely any compression. I am going to pull valve covers tonight and double check my clearances and make sure they are still slacked at TDC. I thought maybe it could have jumped time or something but when I put the tensioner in everything was tight.

Just an update I pulled the valve covers everything seemed fine set at TDC and just as a shot in the dark I set the valves at .005” and boom I have compression now! Not sure why it didn’t have much at .003? I started it and it runs very well and it makes no noise while running.

What does the manual say to set the valves to?

.003 not sure if I have a bad feeler gauge or maybe because it was like 15 degrees outside. Runs great now though.
