yep, frame cracks is a thing on them. if you get into it and it has these issues you can buy a gusset kit. I do not know how far you plan or if you want to tear it down. Around here it is tough to even find a 350x. I hope you get it and for a good deal.

I'm a car guy and trading a chevelle 12 bolt rearend, a set of bucket seats and a pair of headers. trike is a 2 owner, titled, runs, new tires and clutch. Hasn't been used in 5 years, started once in awhile. owner said his riding buddy's moved on, got rid of their dirt toys, he got into musclecars and the trikes just been stored at his buddies. its got a busted rear fender and torn seat. Cool thing, it's got a clean az title. Easy enough to get a bonded title, but always a chance it's been stolen in the past and the trike gets impounded (had it happen before) jim

Definitely the frame crack or break on the left side above the footpeg.
Also the side case to see if the chain has jumped off and cracked the case.
I would still reinforce that area of the frame even if it has not broken yet because when mine happened, the flex caused the chain to jump and cracked the side case. Luckily didn't get into the inner wall.
Add a case saver for added insurance.

no crack in the frame. loose chain, front brake isn't pumped up.

wow, looks like a winner! rear plastic, seat cover and nicer fork boots will make that thing look great. I would rebuild forks. looks like they been leaking as per the way the boots look. Not sure what your car parts were worth but I couldn't touch one like that here for under 2500 or much more. If there would even be one available at all around here.

there was a receipt for a new clutch, tires and rebuild front forks.
seats were worth $500
rearend about $900
used headers $50?
I got his bill of sale when he boigjt it from the original owner, he paid $800. going to order the seat tonight.

WOW. You stole that. Tank looks clean, that's $500. Headlight is $200. No way you'd touch that thing for less than $2k here if you were super lucky. You just hit the jackpot my friend. Congrats

tank is clean inside, guy took care of it when he used it, always drained the carb and when not in use, drained the tank.. headlights aren't working, might look into it Tuesday
debating if I want to spend the money on a rear fender right away. I think it deserves it.
I've been buying 185s projects lately, but glad I finally got a 350x. I had a ad for either a 200x or 350x and the atc gods smiled down on me.
I'm off work for 3 to 5 days anyway, got a nice case of tje shingles on my side, started a week ago and the blisters popped up on Saturday. so the 185s and now the 350x gives me stuff to do. jim. might load it up this weekend and learn to ride the thing. I didn't realize how much bigger it is compared to the 110 and 185s. jim

I'm old enough now that I don't need to be looking for how fast can I go. just want to be able to tool around on something with a suspension vs basically riding 3 basketballs around the desert.

Now you have to learn how to start it. They are a bit finicky but once you learn the sequence they start easy.
The crack that others are talking about isn't by the foot peg. It's above the swing arm bolt right where the gusset stops. The plastic from the rear fenders just barely covers it up so sometimes you can't see it unless the fender is off and it usually starts on the backside of the tube.
That trike looks really complete. Your lucky to find one that some one hasn't molested. The headlight plastic and headlight guard that are in good shape is like striking gold. The front and rear fenders can be replaced with aftermarket. There are a few parts that are getting close to impossible to find so be careful with what's there.

what parts should I be on the lookout for to keep as spares?
It looks like the site plug on the front master cylinder seeps. is there a easy fix for that? jim

I've seen a few site glasses that had been closed up with jb weld and they seem too hold. You loose the ability to see through it but if its leaking its most likley not clear anymore anyway.
Rear master cylinders and rebuild kits are rare.
Working de-comp systems are getting rare also. Brake lines are scarce and expensive.

I've used the e-bay replacement site glasses and had good success with them. They give you a new o-ring and then the window with metal shell around it. Put the o-ring in the hole first, then the new glass. Find one of your sockets that just fits (a little loose) and use that to carefully drive it in just enough to put a little pressure on the o-ring. Don't just hammer away or else you smash and ruin the o-ring.

I don't know if this site still has 12 year d pics. but if there's a way to dig them up, you can see my old pair of 87 200x trikes. the original owner gave them to another guy for some reason and I got them from the second owner, I contacted the original buyer and he sent me the titles. jim

That X is a great pickup. Sounds like a good trade. Enjoy your suspension!
Thats's cool he got it at Apache Honda. Been there many times over the years. Too bad they moved it now. I liked the old building.
I had a pair of 87 200x's also. Sold them both. One was way too nice to ride. Spent years doing a full NOS resto. Went to a collector to be with other mint 3-wheelers. The other was pretty nice as well, but more of a rider.

I started it a couple times Monday, started it once Tuesday to show my wife, once again on Wednesday to show a buddy and here I am today with my knee getting all stupid again (no cartridge in the knee) this is why I sold my 2 200x trikes last year. just messes with my knee so bad. I might take it out this weekend just to get some seat time. maybe talk to the doc about some sort of brace to help support my knee to start the thing. really dont want to get rid of it because I can't start it. maybe learn to start it with my left leg? jim

I have a knee problem also. The brace with the metal hinges on the sides does help. Also, one of my 350x's has an electric start (Goki). It works, but is far from flawless. They are expensive, the company is out of business, so no more parts and you need to have a well functioning de-comp system.

Nice! I wonder if I could stuff some sort of modern 450 an R frame?
BOB MARLIN
02-05-2021, 08:32 PM
Not much room in a R frame. I did measure up a 450 into a 350x frame and it looked plausible, until
I got to the radiators, then not so much. The Goki is cool but too many weak links in the system makes them a little unreliable, but you still have the kick starter if it fails. If you have the skills to transplant a a different engine then you probably have enough skills to do a 450 conversion using the motorcycle frame. It's really not all that difficult.

There is a guy on FB repopping the Goki ring gear for the 350X, maybe some other parts too. Jwheeler probably has a 350x goki kit but it's probably $$$ if he would sell, and understandably so...they are rare.
Jim mac
02-05-2021, 10:27 PM
I'll call my go to guy for atc parts and see if he has any goki parts. that's where I first saw a goki starter, on one of his 350x trikes he had for sale. jim
BOB MARLIN
02-06-2021, 10:43 AM
The ring is the main problem. They are soft steel and just don't hold up well. And the fact that there are 2 different kits. One for the 85 and one for the 86. If you install the wrong kit you will either chew up the ring or break the starter shaft. I have found a replacement starter that fits but can't find the proper spring to use behind the starter shaft gear. Because these starters are used in a almost vertical position but were designed to be in a horizontal position, the spring is not strong enough to keep the two gears from slapping together when you hit a bump. If you change to a stronger spring it won't let the gears mesh properly when you push the button. And I've also found evidence that some of the early 86's need to have the 85' kit.
I would be real interested in talking to the guy that is remaking the ring gear. Do you know what his facebook page is ?.
I would be willing to sell the goki of of mine but it has some of the issues I stated above. And I'm not positive if its an 85 or an 86 kit. I bought it for my 85 but it fit my early 86 so even I don' really know what kit I actually have.

went and met the kids in the desert today. trike is kind of hard to start, saw some fuel dripping out the overflow. I think the reservoir is low for the back brakes because I have no back brakes. when I got it, the owner said it did pump up, im thinking top it off and bleed it. first ride was different from the 185s. but we went one way for 25 minutes and turned around. for a 50 minute ride. next trip was 15 out and 15 back, that time I just turned the petcock off. when we went to leave I started it, then turned the fuel on. I've got sea foam in the gas, probably clean the carb and see how it starts. but overall, I'm happy with the trike, the ride is amazing compared to the 185s. jim

If I had to choose only one of my machines to keep, it would be my 350X, I can ride it fast or slow, I can jump it if I want to, since it's stock, it doesn't use a lot of gas, and it's comfortable enough to ride all day long. It can't do all of the utility type of things that I occasionally do, but I could find another way to do them if I had to.
