my latest pile of junk trike is a 85 125m. it seems these are the red headed step child of the honda world.
I still need to clean the carb and replace the valvestem in
before it can be test drove. But I've been reading about the shift drum boss having issues on the 125m. being a 85 its a up shift, does the 85 have the same issues as the 84s? thanks jim

Well my 85 did have the broken shift drum stopper but the boss wasn't broken. Don't know if I just got lucky or if it's a little stronger than the 84 model.

I did push the shift lever and it clicks in all 4 gears. hoping its good. I bought the trike for the wheels and tank, now I'm inventoring parts to see if its worth putting back together. going to clean the carb this weekend it starts with a jump box. if the clean carb let's it run, ill borrow tje pull start off the 110 and test the trans. jim

I had an 85, broken lever but boss was ok. Its worth taking apart just to check. 84 did have the same issues as far as I know

I have seen broken shift drum stopper arms on the 85, had one we sold a couple years back, the boss was ok but the end of the arm snapped clean off. So maybe the boss is a bit stronger on them, or the stopper arms were weaker! But either way i haven't had an 85 with a snapped off case boss for the stopper bolt. I had a few 84's like that though.
If it clicks through the gears you should be ok, but its worth pulling that side open anyway to clean everything. The oil pickup screen most likely needs cleaning, and i bet the oil rotor is full of sludge. So its worth getting the gasket for that side cover and the oil rotor and pull it apart and clean everything and inspect the shift stopper while you are in there, make sure the bolt hasn't come loose etc.
