110 Hi/Low gearbox question

Ok, I took the high low switch apart,and oil poured out of it. It doesn't get oil from the main case,it is a sealed chamber.How do I get oil back in it? Do I turn the bike on its side and fill it with oil and put it together? I coated the gears really good with wd40, and would it be alright to run it without oil? Its just 3 gears. please help, thanx

I noticed the same thing on my 200, and I'm wondering about it too, I really have no idea. Just to let you know, WD-40 is just a penetrant, not a lubricator. It will all dry up in no time. When I have to lube something with a spray, I opt for Liquid Wrench lubricant, same as WD-40, plus it lubricates, and it's the same price. You won't find WD-40 around me anymore, liquid wrench all the way!

I did use liquid wrench! :-D I just say wd-40. Cool, so it should be alright, right?

Also, you don't run oil either? And something else, when I torque my bolts down, the front sprocket won't rotate.WTF? so oil really isn't an option for me.

I don't know if it's alreight, since I hardly drive it (there's still a couple feet of snow on the ground, I just use the ATC to go to town and to the mail) Hardly any oil came out for me cause I put it back RIGHT AWAY, almost nothing came out. How do you know it's not the crankcase oil? What else could it be. I wouldn't want to run it withough any oil in there, right?

Well, its not like I am starving the crank or nothing, its just a little 2 inch by 2 inch chamber with 3 gears in it.It doesn't have a hole that leads to the crankcase.I guess if I just spray the gears good with liquid wrench after I ride.TimSR, Howdy, anybody know? please help. thanx

Oil does get in their but don't ask me how.
Because thats were my oil leak is at on 79. :oops:

You definitly should have oil in it. Somtimes chemicals such as wd-40 or others can crack seal or o-rings or the like. So if everything is coated with similiar chemicals you could potentialy have problems down the road, plus without oil you could seize bearings. It had oil in there for a reason. Moving parts need constant lubrication.

Ok,big red 110,I fired up the 110 tonight and I saw oil leak out the bottom...there was no oil in there! So, I guess the oil does get in there. Because the oil pump doesn't work without the bike running. :rolleyes: I tightened the screws down,and fixed the leak. :-D Thanx

If I recall, the oil comes through 1 or 2 ports. I'll check tmrw. The whole way that box works is odd, so the oil may also flow between the sproket, which i think it does. Its an odd setup, but it works. The sproket idles on the input shaft, which powers the box. On high, it is a direct ratio to the shaft, just connects the two. On low, it goes through a few more gears. Probably wouldn't be hard to incorporate reverse in there. ;)

The oil get into the Hi/Lo chamber through the main gearbox counter shaft. Its hollow and oil is pumped through it. The oil then drains back into the gearbox through a hole in the case to be recirculated through the engine.

There used to be a company that offered a reverse kit for the early Big Reds that had a similar Hi-Lo setup like the 90/110 motors. I assume that it could be done easily as the kit was a 30 minute bolt on installation. The company was called Paltec in Palatka Florida. I am sure that they no longer exist.
